The only scenes in THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS that work are the ones that play out like a real-life drama. The rest is an unfunny bore with several moments that are out-of-character and/or plain silly:
-At the beginning, warlock JONATHAN BARNAVELT and his nephew LEWIS give an intense look when the town's clock tower's bells ring. Why? At this point, LEWIS doesn't know anything about magic being real.
-JONATHAN says "I was your mom's brother. That makes us family" and later "My father. Your grandfather." Who talks like this?! It's not like there are other instances in the movie that confirm that they're uncle and nephew, so why the forced exposition?
-LEWIS tells TARBY CORRIGAN (one of his classmates) "My house isn't haunted. It's magic," and he replies "Magic doesn't exist." Really? But you don't have a problem believing in ghosts? Is there really that much difference?
-LEWIS looks embarrased when JONATHAN goes to pick him up at school and yells his name. Since when does LEWIS pay attention to what others think? Actually, literally right before this, TARBY has to tell him that he wouldn't be made fun of if he didn't wear goggles, because he couldn't realize it on his own.
-LEWIS, who still hasn't overcome his parents' death, says "I want my mom!" What about his dad? Actually, is his dad ever mentioned in the movie on his own rather than as part of the parents?
-FLORENCE ZIMMERMAN (the neighbor) spends the whole movie being kind to LEWIS and even defending him at times from JONATHAN. So, why is she the one who calls him "weird" when he tries to do a spell and save them?
-After so much build up, ISAAC IZARD (the antagonist) finally shows up in the last part... and his apperance make him laughable rather than threatening. He looks like Benjamin Franklin after being hired as a butler for a gravekeeper. I won't spoil what his evil plan is, but I think you'll figure it out on your own. Just ask yourself "What could a villain in a movie about magic and clocks try to do?" and the first thing that comes to your mind will most likely be the answer, no matter how much it seems like it belongs in an 80s/90s superhero TV cartoon.
