Who else could have played this character well in 1988 besides Arnold, Sly, Sinatra? Dennis Quaid?

I think he's generally too laconic to play someone like him.

I can’t see it happening. Bruce Willis had the raspy voice which fit with the character and his lines better. Besides, I can’t see Ford saying “yippee-ki-yay, motherf**ka” without chuckling.

Itd probably feel like a different character. Bruce Willis kinda has that smartass cop role down pat.

1988 he was far too big a movie star. Maybe if it were 1980.

I'm not sure who could pull off the comical smart ass action hero role like Willis did in that film at the time. Willis kinda came along and created a stir with his "Moonlighting" character, and it morphed into a persona he could bring to the big screen that I don't remember anyone else doing during that period. Maybe Gibson, but he wasn't the same.
Lol, Sinatra was actually first choice when the film was being cast, that would have been interesting. I could have seen him playing that part in 1960 without a doubt. Dean Martin from his Rat Pack comes to mind, he would have had that part down pat back in their day.
Eastwood, Pachino, Gere, Stallone, Caan, Burt Reynolds, Ford, DeNiro, Nolte, Bronson and more were considered before Willis and either turned down or didn't fit, but none of those could have done what Willis did with the role. It fell a long way and thank goodness it did.
If one was looking for someone who could make a film with the the tone of "Die Hard" today (please no remakes), I would think of three actors off the top of my head to cast, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, and Chris Pratt.

Michael Keaton Andrew Dice Clay Wings Hauser Gregory Hines Mark Harmon Keaton would have been a great one. He does smart ass well! Clay, maybe but not sure he could escape his character and flopped as Ford Fairlane because of it. Hauser made a similar movie in "Deadly Force" and nobody knows that film. Hines and Harmon, I just don't see them bringing the persona that Willis did in making the character. But Keaton, I've got to agree, he could have pulled it off, great pick. He did a similar thing with taking on Batman and succeeding when so many couldn't see him doing it. And that was within a year or so of Die Hard.

I think the character only exists as it does because Willis was more of a comedic actor at the time. With someone else, it probably would have been written to fit that actor's strengths. In Ford's case, dry sarcasm and finger pointing.

I don't see it. Now Bruce Campbell, he could have pulled it off.

No. He was too well-known, and John McClane was meant to be an everyday average man. Similar to the reason Steven Spielberg didn't cast Charlton Heston in Jaws, you know Hans Gruber won't win if you have the actor that played Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Also, I don't think Ford would have nailed the wisecracks.
