Anyone else like this one? I was really surprised by its cleverness, filmmaking, and love of the Christmas mythology. Krampus himself was a most impressive monster, and there was some nice build-up and, for a family movie, surprising amount of scares (that jack in the box/clown thing was terrifying!). There’s a nice double-twist near the end–not the very end, to which I was kinda indifferent, but what Krampus does when the kid repents. (It’s funny that he has to “repent” for doing pretty much nothing, but anyway…)
And what does everyone think of that ending?

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments, Salzmank. I thought the ending was kinda silly, but everything else leading up to that was surprisingly pleasant. And yes, for a family horror movie, it’s pretty scary. It reminds me of the original Gremlins in a way.

I agree on all the thoughts above as well, I like this one.
I was mostly surprised, when I first saw it, by just how bizarre it was. It was not the narrative experience I was expecting. Instead, after it sets up its whole scenario, it just becomes sort of a nonstop onslaught of christmassy horrors, with one wave after another picking the characters off and isolating them in the winter wasteland of their town. That was kinda cool.
The other thing was that I didn't expect it to be quite so silly and comedic. I was thinking it would play out in little bit more straight with some subversive comedy thrown in, but instead it starts its horrors off a bit more on the comedy side with some little asshole ginger bread men and gets darker as it goes on.
The cast is pretty good all around. Toni Collette is reliable as always, and the in-laws are two solid character actors. The main kid anchors it pretty well, as does the grandma, but I felt like the big sister should have stuck around longer. She was one of the best cast members and she's dispatched way too early, in what is one of hw best sequences in the film at least with Krampus chasing her jumping from rooftop top rooftop down the suburban street.
And yes, the monsters are mostly pretty cool, and Krampus himself is quite impressive. There's too much obvious CGI, but there are some excellent practical effects throughout. I really would have liked to have gotten a good look at Krampus though, and maybe some of the other monsters. He's wearing a mask that looks like he murdered and skinned Santa Clause, which is pretty sweet, but it would have been nice to get a peak under the mask for a brief moment.
I'm not quite an convinced that we know exactly what happens at the end as everyone else seems to be, but I like that it stayed pretty dark and didn't go with the 'it was all a dream' thing that it first seemed like it was. It stayed in the odd and abstract, sort of. It remained pretty weird right up until the end.

There's a British TV series called 'Inside No 9'.
You should check out an episode called 'The Devil of Christmas'
It concerns Krampus, and the ending is a shocker😯

Eventhough I did enjoy it most of the time(the pacing is a bit wonky), Im still waiting for a real krampus movie.

It's a little silly at times and I don't usually like that in a horror movie, I do like this movie. I love the premise and the setting of being stuck in the middle of a blizzard with intolerable family, hey that's horror enough for me. I wish there was a decent follow up to it...I've looked but all I found were really...REALLY bad horror films.

I didn't quite get what was going on at first, and thought I'd found the wrong show because it legitimately looked like a TV episode of some old 70s series and on IMDb it told me the show was from like 2016. Very well done, and yes, the ending threw me. I didn't see any of this stuff coming.

masterofallgoons, @fjh I see it’s currently on Dailymotion, here. I may watch it tonight if I have time. The show looks pretty interesting.

masterofallgoons, @fjh So I saw it, and liked it, but in retrospect the ending doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I couldn’t believe that production-values, camera-setups, and cast and crew that good would be in a snuff film. It’s up to the quality of ’70s BBC miniseries–which is what they’re going for, but would such a film honestly be up to that quality? Actually, I was more impressed by the movie-in-the-movie; in spite of the silliness, it’s cleverly plotted, with a nice Deathtrap-esque twist. And I was really impressed by how well they copied the ’60s-’70s TV style–I’ve even a few of those productions and liked them, and they got all of those elements perfect. Most of the actors even looked right, which rarely, rarely happens with these. In a way that ’70s atmosphere was almost too good, to the point I didn’t really like the final twist! But Derek Jacobi was hilarious, as usual when he’s asked to play a funny part. I got that something was wrong about the interviewing process early on–though his interrogator had to be the nicest interrogator ever–but I didn’t work out the final twist, no. (Then again, I don’t think we had clues for it.) And even more impressive, in an age where television programs go on forever, is that they managed all this in less than 30 mins.

By the way, I started a thread about Inside No. 9 here–so back to our regularly scheduled Krampus (2015)!

So glad someone created a thread on this!
Krampus is currently my No.1 movie of 2015 and my favourite horror movie of the decade to date (though there are still many I've yet to see). It's my idea of a Christmas-themed horror done right. The dark yet festive mythology, the family home setting, the wintry conditions and the expert balancing of scariness and humour (the scene featuring the gingerbread men was straight out of Evil Dead 2). I also liked the ending. Homely and cosy while at the same time twisted and nightmarish. It's a GREAT film that I often compare with Gremlins (1984).

I’m not a huge horror fan, and I get bored of slashers really easily, so Christmas-set movies about slashers running around with machetes and carving up “naughty kids” don’t interest me. This movie loves Christmas, including its old, pagan underpinnings. It’s a genuine Christmas movie, along with the horror. I was surprised by how much I liked it.

A genuine Christmas movie - that exactly it! It does a wonderful job of blending the family movie feel with a nice horror vibe. There's a lot of creativity to it. I also love that the monster is one that has a basis in tradition/folklore. I first learned about the Krampus years ago and always felt it was an ideal concept for a horror movie.
