I really need to see At Play in the Fields of the Lord, one of those films which has always interested me but, for whatever reason, I have managed to avoid seeing for 27 years! I thought it's odd that critics heaped praise on Hector Babenco for Kiss of the Spider Woman, which I didn't like that much. But At Play... doesn't get as much attention and it seems almost forgotten now. It's not too easy to find. I don't know of any sites which rent it. I think there was some kind of dispute over the rights. There might be some DVD or VHS copies available from Europe or from internet pirates. My copy looks like it was transferred from a VHS.
I've seen people claim it's anti-religious. but it's not. It's anti-interference with indigenous peoples by anyone. And it's timely now considering the recent event in India where the missionary was killed.
I think it's one of Kathy Bates' best performances as a woman who descends into madness. Aidan Quinn, John Lithgow and Tom Berenger all turn in fine work. Tom Waits and Daryl Hannah have smaller roles. It also features some beautiful cinematography and a solid soundtrack.

Yes, I was not that impressed with Kiss of the Spider Woman either. I did admire many of the Hurt-Julia scenes, and both actors were excellent, but I thought the Sonia Braga sequences fell flat. There's a reasonable-looking copy of At Play in the Fields of the Lord on Youtube. My local library doesn't have a copy listed, so I guess I'll check that out. "There's a reasonable-looking copy of At Play in the Fields of the Lord on Youtube."
I found two on YouTube. but one is actually a movie called Treacherous Beauties. I don't know why it's mistitled. And the other is in Polish. Then there are some which claim you can stream it from their site. Good Luck.
All this talk about it, now I might watch it again tonight.
