Although McGraw projected a tough guy screen image, in reality he was quite the cutup ,comedian, and practical joker.
In the key scene in SPARTACUS when Kirk Douglas starts the gladiators revolt by drowning McGraw in a cauldron of soup -- instead of collapsing dead, McGraw picked up his head dripping with hot soup, licked his lips, and declared -- "It needs more salt, Spartacus."
Douglas fell down in helpless laughter.

I think the Coens paid homage to McGraw in Hail, Caesar:

... he never got more opportunities to prove himself at all. He has a pretty impressive FILMOGRAPHY with both Feature Films and television appearances. He may not have been a leading man but he was always a welcome and more than competent character presence throughout his long career. www.imdb.com/name/nm0569902/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm <--- McGraw Link Photo Gallery

Recently watched Roadblock and Narrow Margin and it sucks he never got more opportunities to prove himself at all. Super actor who moved in genre circles that I love passionately. He always brought a commanding presence to noir and Westerns, but he often turns up in films where I least expect him too such as Double Crossbones!
Like the others, always happy to see his name on the cast list.

McGraw may have lacked a "star career" but he had a damn good one as a character actor and occasional B lead. I'd say he did pretty well for himself. The problem for him was that he came up in roughly the same era as many other homely or rugged looking guys who could never have been matinee idols but did become stars and, in some cases, major stars: Lee Marvin, Rod Steiger, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and a whole lotta others, especially on television.

Yep, I forgot he was in the Birds too.
THE THREAT from 1949--highly recommended.
He sure was an impressive bully in SPARTACUS.
"I like you. I want to be your friend."
No, he doesn't.
