The only big screen Javert I have seen who did the role justice was Charles Laughton.
Regarding the musical, I saw a production in Singapore a couple of years ago and the Javert was excellent - I have seen other productions where he barely makes an impression. I guess it's a difficult role to nail - a major character with a lot of impact, a lot of screen/stage time but a rather one note personality compared to some of the other players in the story. It takes real presence to make him stand out.

I hear Russell Crowe's signing is awful in that movie. he is alright, you can tell that the singings a bit off tempo actually.
