Watched Norbit (2007) for the second time. I picked up the DVD for just $3 years ago at Walmart on a Black Friday and just now got around to it.
It's really not too bad. I had low expectations from hearing about its reputation all these years. Including that this movie is the reason Eddie Murphy did not get an Academy Award for Dream Girls. If there is any truth to that, the Academy is even more BS and out of ouch than I thought.
The only two scenes that kinda put me off/could do without is when Lloyd the pug talks, and the sped up footage of Rasputia running at the end.
Now, I'll get to the good points. An incredible cast. Especially the stunning Thandie Newton. Cuba Goooding Jr. is good as her smarmy, shady fiancee. Terry Crews as Rasputia's brother Big Black Jack.(one of three; the other bro, Blue, is funny too) may be the black Arnold Shwartzenegger, but with better comedic timing. Eddie Griffin and Kat Williams almost steal the movie as a couple of retired pimps; especially their scene in the church.
Damn, I almost forgot Marlon Wayans as power tap dance guru, Buster. His stuff had me lol. Buster has a Power Tap infomercial included in the extras that is worth price of the disc alone.
From the opening scene, when baby Norbit is tossed from a barely stopped car, alongside a Chinese restaurant/orphanage, and the owner Mr. Wong (Murphy) finds him the next morning and shoos a couple coyotes away from him ("You coyotes not get another one"!) you know this flick does not take itself too seriously at all.
It's no The Nutty Professor, not even close but imo it is equal TNP 2: The Klumps. The main problem is the supporting cast are funnier than Murphy's Rasputia and especially Mr. Wong, so they overshadow all the main cast parts, and I ended up wanting the movie to give even more time and scenes to Griffin and Katt.
Rasputia is funny though. Norbit is a really sweet likable character. I haven't seen Thandie Newton in anything else, but I intend to.
Not sure if this flopped at the box office, but I gotta believe a large part of its bad reputation comes from when it first hit theaters and people expected another TNP.
Eddie and his brother Charlie (who voices Lloyd) wrote it. FX legend Rick Baker did the make ups, and to my surprise Brian Robbins (who played Eric on Head of the Class) directed.
Anyone else like or at least not hate Norbit[/]?
