I've seen people call her 'Captain SJW.' Sure some criticism is legit, the movie isn't for everyone, but some is motivated by sexism because they're just never OK with a superhero that isn't a straight white guy. Many of the people criticizing Captain Marvel and its trailers are the same folk who liked the Wonder Woman from last year and have expressed favoritism of strong female characters like Ellen Ripley, Leia Organa, Sarah Connor, Beatrix Kiddo, Nyota Uhura, Trinity, Clarice Starling, Mulan, Furiosa, Lara Croft, Selene, and other female heroes from the MCU. I don't think they are.

Its another meh movie what do you expect? Hmmmmm…Considering its based on more recent comics and that the titular character is not making jokes or smiling very much I would've assumed you would've labeled the movie as "looking great".

They all grew on me, with the sole exception of Gwyneth Paltrow who I didn't like from the start. Even though I got a kick out of Tilda Swinton whooping it up in the Marvel universe, my ears hear things about cultural appropriation and the role being better served by an Asian actress. I'll take their word for it since I don't know what the character looks like beyond Tilda Swinton.
I definitely agree that the male casting is out of the park, and I thought the ladies from Black Panther were terrific too.
Natalie Portman was interesting. I hear that she phoned it in a little on Thor 2 because they fired her homie Pattie Jenkins. Maybe it's with a little irony that I think one of the best and most decorated actresses of their lot was miscast. She can probably act circles around Jaimie Alexander but in costume and in character, Jaimie Alexander does kind of look like a better match for Thor.
I had my doubts about Olsen but she picked up as her accent declined and her brother died.
Do you watch the Netflix shows too? It could be my imagination but their female casting seem a lot better cast.
I'm not saying that MCU is terrible with their female casting, just that they aren't as successful with it as their male casting. Thus why you kinda have to get them to "grow on you". But I guess I agree with much of what you say anyway. The Netflix (and especially the ABC) shows have better female casting and a stronger female presence overall. Jessica Jones, Colleen Wing, Melinda May, Peggy Carter, Aida/Madamme Hydra, Daisy Johnson.... these are all strong characters played by well-picked cast. I'm still on the fence about Elektra though. Though she's decent I feel like they didn't really do her character justice, especially when you consider that she's one of the most well-known female characters in the Marvel universe. I'm not on the fence about Elektra, I thought she was pretty bad. I didn't care much for her, but I thought she improved a little bit from Daredevil season 2 and The Defenders. It could be just the actress. It sounds mean but I thought her improvement showed through the strongest with less of a speaking role. For some moments, she was believably dangerous, and I personally envy the actress for having so much one on one screen time with Sigourney Weaver. That must be a intriguing and plentiful learning opportunity. In terms of the story, in The Defenders I got a kick out of her being the most dangerous person in the room in every room. If I really didn't like her I wouldn't criticize her at all, or give her a time of day. So "decent" works great for me.
I...have not watched Agents of Shield. I don't know anything about it save for that it exists. I liked Peggy Carter, actress, role and all. I thought she fit in well with Captain America, but I haven't seen her show either. Not enough hours in a day, but it seems highly worth getting into (both her show and Agents of Shield). I'm virtually always down for more good entertainment.

I'd say most probably would be less harsh on the movie if you had Emily Blunt as Carol instead, she is a much better and more charismatic actress than Larson, also more diverse and even a more believable action heroine. Totally agree, of course! Emily Blunt showed impressive chops as action heroine in Edge of Tomorrow.

Tonally it was all over the place, story wise it was generic as heck and didn't do anything remotely clever or exciting with its premise, the characters were pretty underdeveloped and uninteresting, not too mention the logic fails soared over the moon. But it wasn't mature, a mature movie wouldn't have its protagonist act like a buffoon in a restaurant, proclaim a steak to be "not alive" and jump into a tank of lobsters and bite their heads off - and that's not even the end all of the idiocies the filmmakers decided to place in the film. Yes, Tom Hardy was great. Great actors can still shine in an otherwise weak movie, nothing new.

Because she sold it and was completely believable in the role. Let's hope Larson can do the same with Captain Marvel.

Blunt can switch between all sorts of roles be it Mary Poppins to Queen Victoria to My Little Pony to Into The Woods to A Quiet Place to Rita from Edge of Tomorrow to Evelyn from A Quiet Place with so much ease. I hope Marvel Studios gets to make a proper Fantastic Four movie where she and her husband John Krasinki, who can also take on directing duties, as Sue and Reed.

In my (humble) opinion, Agents of SHIELD has by far the best female representation/empowerment out of any superhero TV show. It never feels preachy, doesn't feel like some kind of SJW agenda. They just so happen to make strong, competent, complex and well written female characters. They also have a near equal amount of strong male characters, just have slightly more strong female characters (especially as the series progressed). It's a shame more people don't watch it.

That's as solid an endorsement I'll ever need. Once I finished plowing my way through Star Trek The Next Generation on Netflix I'll find Agents. I've been meaning to find it and Agent Carter for a while.

Yeah, saw her in some of those movies, plus a bunch of others, and she's been consistently believable in her performances. Not once I thought she was miscast, nor she was just there.
Honestly I'd prefer a different role, but I'd be definitely happy anyway. Problem is that she's getting old in Hollywood terms.

So far I haven't been impressed by Larson and to be honest, her delivery of "I'm going to end the war" in the trailer is hilariously bad.

She was the original choice for Black Widow. But she had a scheduling conflict.

I think she would've killed in that role. Scarlett Johansson is not bad, but she's bland.
