some to me are good but it depends on the driver as well.

I always like taxi scenes in the movies, where people either have a hard time getting a taxi, or, if they do manage to get one, have an interesting conversation with the cab driver. Such scenes were staples of classic films.
*edit: see the 1963 film The Wheeler Dealers, with James Garner, for an excellent example of this.

In Manhattan, I found taxis very important. Didn't converse with drivers too often.
Always liked in the movies and TV when somebody steps out of a building, puts up their hand, then yells 'taxi', and a taxi pulls right up.

I feel for taxi drivers, Uber has taken a large chunk of their market without the huge initial financial outlay taxi drivers are required to pay.

I think I would be. Really good taxi driver but no one would actually pay a premium for that.

I prefer driving my own vehicle or walking or taking the subway.
Loved when taxi drivers were mass protesting Uber, doing drive alongs for news crews - one finger on the wheel not looking at the road talking how much more dangerous Uber drivers could be without regulations. I was in a cab once who turned left into opposing traffic lane, luckily it was 3am near my house. Drunk we still had to correct the idiot.

I was a taxi driver for a while.
Inhumanly long hours that can completely dominate your life, shitty pay and if you get into trouble, you're on your own - in every way that matters.
However, some of the customers were interesting.

I use them sometimes 'cause I don't drive (I usually have other people drive me to and from places) but I have had mostly good experiences with them and some of them have arrived later than they were supposed to and I didn't like waiting but aside from that I can't complain 'cause I have heard of people having far worse experiences than me and a lot of it depends on the driver.

Been about 2 or 3 years since I rode in a taxi. I was with my siblings in Chicago. Before that it had been many years since I was in a taxi, maybe as far back as my childhood in the 1970s. When in need of transportation other than my own car, I usually take public transportation bus or subway. I have never ridden in a taxi by myself only with others, usually family.
I think part of it might be some kind of taxi phobia or distrust of the driver. I don't want to even think about using Uber, Lyft or similar "personal" taxi services.

I only use taxis when I visit other cities. I must say I loved those black cabs in London.

Hardly ever enough where I live. So long as operations like lift and Uber exist, I may never use another one.

I just landed in Mexico City at the main airport, and needed a taxi to my hotel. The travel guide I had said to take only the green cabs, and never take the red cabs. So I get in line where people are getting in the green cabs. Got in a green cab, the driver proceeded to drive out of the airport area, then into some neighborhood where there were a bunch of red cabs parked. Then I got transfered into some shady red cab. The driver offered to put my bag in the trunk and opened the back seat door to let me in. I kept my bag, and told him I'm sitting up front. Then once we got moving I pulled out a cigarette, put it in my mouth, and held the lighter up to it before looking at him and said "esta bein?" or whatever. I just didn't want to seem to kidnapable or anything, so I acted kind of like a jerk.

Once they were a good option, and they were relativly cheap, for one who didn't want to bring a car into a city center.
Nowdays they cost a half-fortune, at least in Sweden, it would be cheaper to take a bus and share it with a about 50 or so Swedish drunks who forgot were they were supposed to jumo off.

I wish these made a comeback. I miss riding in them. So much leg room, so much trunk space.
