so Jean Louis or Alain who do you prefer?. Very difficult to say. Since I've seen many more Alain movies than Jean-Louis movies, there is an unfairness in the balance for me to make up my mind. As French movie legends I think they are equaly important, even if their movies appeals to different kind of audiences for the most part of their careers. That is my very diplomatic answer.

Yes - a big fan.......... David Shipman calls him the only French actor of his generation aside from Belmondo to "matter". (Sorry Alain!) In addition to those mentioned other good ones on his CV are: as young Danceny in the Vadim DANGEROUS LIAISONS, Zurlini's VIOLENT SUMMER, Chabrol's LES BICHES and LE TRAIN opposite Romy Schneider. Suspect THE CONFORMIST may be consensus view as his career peak... but we are spoiled for choice. My favourite of his is the MATA HARI movie as Moreau's dashing tomantic interest - their tender and credible romance gives the film real heart among all the thrilling spy stuff.....marvelous set piece - one of several (co-screenwriter Truffaut was in his Hitchcock "phase" and it shows- beautifully!) - has them trapped in a barn fending off the hun. Sorry to report I didn't care for the Lelouche, the one that made him an international name, which to me always seems like a two hour Cinzano commercial. One of the reasons he lasted so long was his ability to turn his hand to anything and seek variety. After THE CONFORMIST and several highbrow intellectual's favourites, for example , he asked his agent to get him an acting job in the stupidest film possible, by way of light relief. That film was.... SO SWEET SO PERVERSE Most Wanted- source for LE COEUR BATTANT with English subs. Also....any ANGELIQUE movie subbed or dubbed
