In the summer of 1992, Stacy McCall(18)and Suzie Streeter(19) from Springfield, Mo attended to their high school graduation ceremony. At some point, they assisted to a party and were planning to stay in a hotel in Branson, Mo so they would visit with their friends the next morning the water park in the city. However, these plans changed and the women decided to stay with their friend Janelle Kirby, who later told them that she couldn't host them because her house would be too crowded. This is when Suzie and Stacy decided to stay in the former's house that she shared with her mother Sherrill Levitt.
The women arrived at Suzie's approximately at 2:15 am. At 8:00 or 9:00 am, Jannelle and her boyfriend arrived at the house so they could go to the water park, but no one was in the there. They noticed that the porch light globe, but not the light bulb, was broken and the door wasn't locked. Janelle and her boyfriend cleaned the shattered glass. Once in the house, Janelle answered a call from a strange man making sexual innuendos, but she hung-up. The man called once more but Janelle didn't talk to him. That day, more than ten more people entered the house, including Stacy's mother, who reported her daughter missing to the police, accidentally erasing a strange message someone had left in the answering machine. It is believed that the message could have been important for the investigation and it wasn't related to the calls received by Janelle.
The strangest thing so far is that, by Janelle's arrival, everything seemed as if no one had left or entered the house. The dog was inside, the women's cars were there. Suzie's tv was turned on, their purses were there and it looked like Stacy and Suzie had prepared to go to bed as their jewelry and used make-up removal pads were found in the washroom. Also, there were no signs of struggle.
As the time went by, the police received thousands of tips including a sighting of a distressed Suzie driving a van two days after the disappearance and a male voice telling her "don't do anything stupid". The police followed the lead to no avail.
Sometime in spring, Suzie's then boyfriend and his friend had stolen some skulls in a cemetery. After the women went missing, the friend tried to sell the golden fillings found in the skulls to a local pawn shop. Suzie was supposed to testify before the court in the case of the cemetery incident. This incident promoted its investigation as a possible motive for the women's disappearance. Some sources indicate that Suzie's ex-boyfriend and his friend were cleared while others claim that they're still persons of interest.
Other theories involve the convicted kidnapper and suspected murderer Robert Craig Cox who was in Springfield at the time of the disappearance. He claimed that the women were murdered and their bodies were buried, but that they'd never be found. He told the police that he was home with his parents when the women went missing. His parents corroborated the alibi. It's unknown if Cox knows something or if he was just playing with the investigators.
MY THEORIES
The assailant(s) was someone Suzie or Sherrill knew enough to let them inside. The broken globe was just an unrelated accident.
Someone broke the light globe to lure one of the women outside the house. It was probably someone the women didn't know enough to open the door for if the assailant decided to knock.
One of the women, probably Suzie or Stacy, broke the globe by mistake when arriving. One of them opened the door and went to get the cleaning tools. The assailants just happened to drive by their house and saw an opportunity to kidnap the women.
In any case, I believe that the assailant(s) was someone who knew that only two women lived in the house.
The motive, however, isn't clear. Both Sherrill and Suzie had been involved with sketchy/untrustworthy people, so it's very likely that one of them was the target and Stacy was just collateral damage. It's also possible that there wasn't any motive. The assailant(s) was just looking to kidnap someone for the thrill or to satisfy an urge to kill and saw the two women living alone as a convenient target. In any case, the kidnapper(s) entered the house and most likely pointed a gun to one of the women threatening to kill her. This way, the women were taken to a vehicle with no struggle.
Rumors say that their bodies are buried under the parking garage of CoxHealth, a hospital in Springfield. Rick Norland, a mechanical engineer used a ground-penetrating radar in the area and said that he found three ground anomalies consistent with a grave site, but the police said that there wasn't enough evidence to perform such a costly excavation. The source of the rumor is disputed. Many people say it started with a psychic. However, Kathy Baird, a reporter, claims on an interview for the show Disappeared that she received that tip from several sources. In fact, she was the one who got Norland to scan the parking lot.
What are your opinions as well?
