Some of these I'm surprised they were already added like Rebecca or Lady from Shanghai.

I watched Lady From Shanghai and On The Town within this calendar year.
I too am surprised that a few of these were not already on the register, e.g. The Informer, My Fair Lady, and Days Of Wine And Roses.
"They are not long, the days of wine and roses: Out of a misty dream Our path emerges for a while, then closes Within a dream."
– Ernest Dowson, from "Vitae Summa Brevis" (1896)

How long has this thing been going and how many titles on it? According to my very best friend (Wikipedia): By my count (including the 2018 inductees) there have been 727 films preserved in the Register.

Are you people blind? Don't you realize that a national film registry is the first step in the government's plan to take away our films?

What is the importance of the National Film Registry?
"The National Film Registry (NFR) is the United States National Film Preservation Board's (NFPB) selection of films deserving of preservation. The NFPB, established by the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, was reauthorized by acts of Congress in 1992, 1996, 2005, and again in October 2008. The NFPB's mission, to which the NFR contributes, is to ensure the survival, conservation, and increased public availability of America's film heritage." - wikipedia
Films are selected by the NFR from films nominated by its members and the public that have cultural and historical significance to America from various eras, and cover everything from features, documentaries, experimental and avant-garde films, commercials, and even 1-5 minute films that document unique things about American culture that are worth preserving. One of the films this year is an 1898 film, "Something Good - Negro Kiss," which lasts about a minute, but is clearly historically significant. I saw it night before last and found it captivating.

The selection process by a bunch of guys of whom no-one has ever heard seems very cumbrous. Surely the choices should be made by whoever is the current American President? He (or she) is the embodiment of the United States and speaks for the people.

london777 Here are the current members of the National Film Registry who vote each year for a total of 25 of those films nominated by the public and other organizations. Public nominations play a key role when the Librarian and Film Board are considering their final selections. They, I believe, are far better qualified to select significant films, given their experience in the medium, than any President of the United States. He (or she) is the embodiment of the United States and speaks for the people. If the films were chosen by POTUS, you would get the other side, (whichever one is not in power) loudly saying that the choices are bias, and on POTUS speaking for "the people", in the 2000's there have been two winners who have not gotten the "popular" vote.

"The Shining (1980)" really came a long way. It was panned when it first released, saying that people would have problem understand the movie if not reading the book. It even got a Razzie nomination for Kubrick. When I watched it later, I was blown away by the atmosphere especially the back story and did not get the hate. Glad people finally gets Kubrick style and accept it as a horror classic.

But I am sure he has excellent taste in movies. "Home Alone 2" would have been selected. I understand Air Force One and Independence Day are his favorites. In fact, they inspired him to stand for President and he stands ready to play similar roles in real life. Not sure about your suggestion, The plot might be a bit too complex to follow and I do not think he like kids very much.

I forgot how beautiful Holly Hunter was back in the 80s and 90s.
