Lebowskidoo 🦞 Thanks for the wonderful tribute to this wonderful film. It's a classic that will live forever. About this: "Though not a critical or box office hit right away, it will go on to become a holiday classic, showing in theaters and on TV for decades to come." So, true. Because of the traumas WWII had inflicted upon America at the time of its release, audiences didn't warm to it. It was so not a success, in fact, that Capra's production company, Liberty Films, did not renew the copyright on it, which made it available to television stations everywhere. Ultimately, that's how it came to be the beloved film it always deserved to be and always will be from this day forward, I'm sure.

Like George Bailey himself, no movie is a failure that has friends.

So hard to believe no one cared much for it upon its initial release, I guess it needed time to pass and moods to change. It's seen as the ideal Christmas movie by so many now.

Great film, definitely a favorite from as far back as I can remember. I remember the colorized versions on the cable network too (TBS? I think).
Are any of the cast still alive? Some of the Bailey kids could possibly still be around. I figure Zuzu was maybe 4 or 5 during filming?...

An absolute masterpiece!
And how many times have we heard something like this before? "Though not a critical or box office hit right away, it will go on to become a holiday classic, showing in theaters and on TV for decades to come."
It seems like half of the films that are considered classics today were critical and box office failures. All the more reason to ignore such things.

And a few years back, my next-door neighbor happened to meet her at a party (yes, a Christmas party) in Seattle. Knowing I was a classic film buff, she couldn't wait to tell me.
