Why is it them slicing their thumbs to draw blood more unnerving then some of the nastier scenes? Is it because it feels more real and personal? Sort of same reaction when the first Jackass movie shows them giving each other paper cuts.

Because cutting oneself can fall under a rather very serious topic.

Because cutting oneself can fall under a rather very serious topic. Can watch people get blown away in Die Hard and not blink an eye, but when McClane craws into the bathroom with the trail of blood from his feet, it's hard not to wince.

It is needed and well executed in this movie. But it seems like every genre based movie and TV show today forces in scenes of people cutting themselves, usually for bad or contrived reasons. They also usually cut themselves in the palm of their hands (dumbest place possible). I really dislike it.

Why slice the thumbs (which are more essential)? Why not cut the pinky or ring finger? I always wondered about that. Otherwise, it's such a great scene. An unmasking of the whodunnit killer.

I just winced thinking about a papercut in the web between fingers.

Maybe that’s because it’s more realistic to get your feet hurt than getting shot by a badass with a machine gun.
