My favorite Peckinpah film, Boo. I haven't seen it in so long, but I loved it then, and believe I still would if I saw it again today. Great script, performances, locations, everything. And a strong moral compass that was challenging but rewarding. Hi Spidey ! This movie was a 'like' for me when I first saw it, but I actually started loving and appreciating it after my second viewing. I have probably seen it about 5 times now, and it's one of those that gets better with each viewing. If possible, I will probably love it even more after I purchase the blu-ray. This film was such an elegant and classy swan song for Randolph Scott, and like you, it's my favorite from Peckinpah.

I like Peckinpah's comment about McCrea and Scott heading for the final shootout: "Those two guys had the best 'walk' in all of film!"

That's such great news Boo. I'll be purchasing a copy. Howdy JC ! It's such a joy knowing that one of my longtime favorite "movie lovers" is active on this new site.

Same here, Boo. I like your Glenn Ford image there.
Oh, Sam meant it most sincerely. He was a great admirer of both of those Western icons, and purposely staged that famous finale walkup to take advantage of their determined stride.
The final shot of Joel looking back westward and slowly fading out of the frame brings unabashed tears at every viewing.
That was meant to be his swan song as well as Scott's. But he got talked into doing a couple more as a favor to a friend and to his son Jody. He valued loyalty over legendary.

It has the best ending of any western and one of the best endings of any film. Love the movie.

Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott rounded off their careers very well with this late western, and those two is what makes this western entertaining.

I have just bought THE SEARCHERS on Blu Ray, and it looks amazing on this format. Also got Wilder's Kirk Douglas-starring ACE IN THE HOLE. We live in incredible times for "movie lovers". I just wish they would hurry up and release a Blu Ray version of WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN". Also, NORTH DALLAS FORTY. I have them on DVD, but the dark, muddy-looking MGM/UA zone-1 DVD 1 of WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN is not a particularly nice print and this great seventies film is crying out for a restored Blu Ray version (where are the folks at Criterion when we need them?). Moving away from the classic era, have you seen the terrific, eighties-set Sundance Channel series HAP AND LEONARD (now on season 2)? If you haven't, track it down. I think it will be something that will give you as much pleasure as it has given my partner and I. Leonard (Michael Kenneth Williams) is a gay, black ex Navy Seal with a passion for westerns, so we get clips of old black and white Randolph Scott movies playing on VHS in the background at times. www.youtube.com/watch?v=axBe1-DBoNo

Powerful scene, when he says "I'll see you later" meaning in heaven

I'm definitely looking forward to this one. I'm becoming more and more of a Randolph Scott fan. Never really saw most of his films until recently and they have almost all been winners. What a great actor.

What a great actor. Interesting fella, Scott. On the set of his Westerns, he could be found in costume (buckskin, boots, spurs, gunbelt) sitting between scenes reading the Wall Street Journal or clipping coupons. After retiring from films following the success of HIGH COUNTRY, Randy was finally able to join the prestigious and exclusive Los Angeles Country Club that made it a rule not to accept actors (when Victor Mature's application for membership was turned down for the same reason, he told them: "I am NOT an actor -- and I can show you the reviews to prove it!") I think in the late 1930s Scott, a real life Virginia gentleman, would have been cast well playing 'Ashley Wilkes' in GWTW.
