Well......that would be like saying "why should make another Captain America movie since the 1970's and 1990's films were garbage? It's useless to try"

With things like Dragonball, Speed Racer, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira, you have more than a bit of a cultural barrier at play. To be perfectly frank, the filmmakers not understanding the culture and mindset that birthed the material is a big part of why Dragonball: Evolution failed.

When I was around 5 I loved a show about a man's mother coming back after dying as a car. Present it. Stay inside the lines you have created. Make it interesting. I was surprised by how much they changed in DBE yet kept so much I vaguely remember Speed Racer from my childhood. I enjoyed the movie. People get so damned attached to their precious childhood memories. You can't go back. It's all forward.

However, I don't think it was just the people who watched the originals who didn't like the two films. I know there were a lot of new audience members who didn't, either. One of the things Akira is going to have to overcome is being based on one of the cornerstone anime works. Expectations are going to be high and I doubt the filmmakers will be able to live up to the original in many people's eyes.

Like Adam Wingard, Jordan Peele should stick to his original idea of making horror films. These manga-to-Hollywood live action movies have pretty much the same success rate as video game adaptations.

Never saw Keanu? Peele's movie from last year? Peele is a nerd. One of us. A fanboy They've brought the show back on Comedy Central so you can catch it if you care to. Get Out fits the style. Keanu was probably more the style of the show-panning out & hitting everything they're interested in. His next could be sci-fi & it would be inside his base. Like Keanu had the freaky killer team that couldn't be killed.

I don't question his nerd cred, I just don't think he should be fucking with this cursed genre. I'd be interested in an original sci-fi film from him, though.

So many others freaked, but I could see it as a fan rushing home after school to watch it making that movie. The show dealt with different times & even parallel worlds. Burton's movie could easily have been behind one of the doors in the West Wing. I enjoyed the female Ghostbusters If it's so sacred I can't stand a remake, I just won't watch it. Actually, it's songs for me. My first reaction to a cover is usually hate. I need to hear it a dozen times before I warm up to it. But everyone has the right to remake whatever they want. It might suck but it might work

Ghost in the Shell is down to 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, imo that's too high.
I hated the movie and walked out of the theater. Horrible movie, completely leaving out anything interesting.
Still, that's just my opinon.
So far, I haven't seen a single good Western movie based on a manga/anime. I've seen good Japanese ones. (to be fair, not that many either.) 20th Century Boy trilogy was very enjoyable, and definitely the first part was very good.
But Western made? Not a single one.
Akira in one movie is not going to work. The manga itself is lengthy, to say the least. The movie was fun, but really only showed a small part of the total storyline.
I'ld say make a series out of the manga. A season per volume, it might work out better. Or, and this might be preferable: don't do it.
Try something original for a change.
