Thanks, Petrolino. I thought about doing a thread on him twice before but couldn't for some reasons. He is one of my all-time favourite actors of international cinema. I have enjoyed him in various roles, be that in tragic love story Le Jour Se Leve or in cool gangster movie Touchez Pas au Grisbi. The best thing about him was that even though he played tough guys he would neither appear over animated nor dull. The level of charisma and energy he brought the screen was perfect as per the role demanded of him. Not many actors have this quality of appearing balanced. I have yet to see some of his great movies though till now I have never been disappointed with him. Here are my ratings for some of my fav movies that stars him.
La Grande Illusion (1937) - 10/10 The Lower Depths (1936) - 9/10 Le Jour Se Leve (1939) - 9/10 Touchez Pas au Grisbi (1954) - 8/10 Two Men in Town (1973) - 8/10 Pépé le Moko (1937) - 7/10

He definitely has an aura.
I've seen quite a lot of Jean Renoir's films over the years, but never 'The Lower Depths'. It's high on my list of targets so nice to see you've rated it so high/.
Not heard of Jose Giovanni's 'Two Men In Town' (1973). Here, he's with Alain Delon and Gerard Depardieu, two of the most recognisable French icons from future generations.
The Lower Depths is a great play for movie adaptations. I have also seen the adaptation by Kurosawa Donzoko (1957) and liked that too. An Indian adaptation titled Neecha Nagar (1946) won Palme d'Or at the first Cannes Film Festival in 1946.
I do strongly recommend any of the versions on the great play.
