It’s okay. Didn’t quite like it as much as I expected.

6/10 One of those films that starts out average then gets better as it goes along. Its good I just never loved it. Laurence Olivier is great though.

It's good and underrated, though the first act is admittedly messy. The second half is a thriller with great characters.

I last watched it back in the summer of 2010, so the details are rather hazy at this point. I do recall liking it a lot, however, and would class it as one of Dustin Hoffman's best movies. Loved the villain.

Pretty much agree with the consensus here. An excellent film that just gets better and better. I think the test of time, which really takes over a century, will be kind to this.
Like most great films, it has many "great scenes". "Is it safe?" is great. The ending is totally unpredictable. There's a similarity here with Culpepper in that it goes at a pace of status quo, then winds up with a continual blood bath, except this one is a bit more believable considering the characters involved.
I'm not sure I call this a classic yet, but it won't take much convincing to sway me into calling it a classic. I think it's going to be one when the century mark is hit, and those involved are long gone.
9/10 for now.

LOVE this film.
Really miss Roy Scheider. While people don't bring him up in regard to this film too much, that hotel room scene is damn memorable.
