Which one of these two do YOU prefer? It's a Wonderful Life (1946), the GREATEST and the BEST Christmas film EVER!!! OR the HIGHLY-OVERRATED and BORING A Christmas Story (1983).

Two very different types of movie. A Christmas Story is a pure comedy for great entertainment through the reminiscing innocent eyes of a child. It's a Wonderful Life is a deep movie about life's perspective. Which one is better will depend on what the viewer wanted. Movie buffs mostly will prefer It's a Wonderful Life more.

Great Jimmy Stewart's It's a Wonderful Life is a once in a lifetime movie. I didn't know about the 1983 movie before I read this thread.

Do YOU mean that YOU are ONLY going to watch it once during YOUR lifetime, OR that it's SO GREAT that it can ONLY be made (filmed) ONCE-in-a-lifetime? The second one is shown as a Christmas day marathon (ad nauseam ) on two channels here in America: TNT and TBS.

That's what I hoped you meant but had to make it clear.

Actually WONDERFUL LIFE was remade as a TV-Movie (IT HAPPENED ONE CHRISTMAS) in the late 1970s with a feminist twist. Marlo Thomas was 'Mary Bailey' and Cloris Leachman played the angel 'Clara.' Orson Welles was 'Potter.'
(I know -- terrible idea)

I appreciate both but It's a Wonderful Life is a pure classic.
I do like the nostalgia aspect of A Christmas Story. Basically smallish town USA with the department store Christmas display and the associated 1940's/early 1950's vibe. I think it helps that one Christmas I begged for a BB gun myself, but it was a more powerful Crossman... I actually got it too. Didn't shoot my eye out.

OK, but how did little Mary know that Gower had accidentally put poison in the medicine?
Potter comes off as just a bully, picking on poor Mary.
George comes off as a real jerk in Pottersville -- hitting on Mary.

George comes off as a real jerk in Pottersville -- hitting on Mary. Potter is supposed to be evil, he's the the villain. They made George jerky to add to Mary's pain and sense of loss. He's not the George she knows and loves because she was never born. It's actually pretty realistic.
