No
p.s. a movie like Christmas Vacation is a legitimate Christmas movie.

Yes even though there has little to do with Christmas in the overarching story. We don’t have enough good/great Christmas movies, and Die Hard has to be one of them.

The Space Network had a Die Hard Marathon yesterday. I'll say it's more Christmas than Sci-Fi.

No p.s. a movie like Christmas Vacation is a legitimate Christmas movie. I completely agree... "Silent Night" (2002) is also a TRUE "Christmas" Movie! imdb2.freeforums.net/post/2430236

James Given your comments there that's more of a NO than a YES. because if people can count random movies as Christmas movies just by being slightly affiliated with Christmas, that's kind of a half-assed standard to use if you ask me. so when I think of Christmas movies I tend to stick to ones that can't be questioned as legitimate Christmas movies like Christmas Vacation (1989) etc etc. or even if you lower the standards a little bit for claiming something is a Christmas movie I still would not consider Die Hard a Christmas movie. or look at it this way... it's definitely closer to not being a Christmas movie than it is being one if you start looking at random movies with slight Christmas affiliation to the more concrete examples. like Die Hard might be more Christmas than some movies slightly affiliated with Christmas but it's not exactly heavily Christmas themed either like Christmas Vacation and the like. Die Hard is basically a action movie with a little bit of Christmas in it is about it. so it's only mildly a Christmas movie at best. so with Die Hard there is enough doubt for someone to say it's not a Christmas movie where as with movies like Christmas Vacation it won't be questioned by anyone. like if someone asked if 'Christmas Vacation' was a Christmas movie that would be a YES from everyone. even if you lower the standards a little from Christmas Vacation I still doubt Die Hard would make the cut. hell, even if we wanted to vote on whether a random movie is a Christmas movie or not I would probably think we would need a MINIMUM of 70/30 in favor of it being a Christmas movie. although I would feel better with more of a 80/20 (or higher) standard in favor of something being a Christmas movie as at that point the overwhelming majority would say it's a Christmas movie. Sure, but I would rather limit things to more clear cut examples (or thereabouts) than use half-assed ones just to give more quality movies to the type of genre a movie is in. NOTE: I guess if decent Christmas movies where almost non-existent then in that case I would be more willing to consider Die Hard a Christmas movie at that point. but even then it's still stretching it a bit. but I suspect a topic like this, whether a random movie is a Christmas movie or not, boils down to the type of standard people use as I think there are two types... A)Those who answer NO to this topic... are more of the type that tend to want more concrete Christmas movies that no one (or almost no one) would question as a Christmas movie. B)Those that answer YES to this topic... are more of the type that only a little bit of Christmas in a movie would make it count as a Christmas movie. p.s. hell, I would pretty much apply that to many types of movies as in my mind there are not that many special movies in general. because looking at all movies out there... there can't be more than hundreds of movies that a lot of people think stand out in general (like sticking mostly to movies that the general public likes a lot or thereabouts) which is a tiny fraction of total movies made. while I don't have any concrete stats on this stuff I think what I just said is a good ball park figure as I can't be off by much either way.
Yes, I don't see how anyone could say Die Hard is a Christmas movie unless they lower their standards so then they can count it. it's really that simple.
so if you want to use the standard of any slight affiliation with Christmas in a movie then at this point you could easily claim Die Hard is a Christmas movie. but short of that, for those of us who have more of a higher standard, and want more of a concrete example or thereabouts, then Die Hard simply won't make the cut as it's basically a action movie with a little bit of Christmas in it.
or if I put Die Hard into one of the following categories I would say Option A for sure...
A)Under 50% (i.e. for those movies that are mostly not a Christmas movie even though is affiliated with it on some level)
B)50%-ish (i.e. for those movies that might be on the edge either way)
C)Over 50%(i.e. leaning towards a movie being a Christmas movie but there might be some slight doubts)
...and then the clear cut kind like Christmas Vacation etc which are pretty much say 100%.

It's a Christmas movie because if you took out the Christmas part, it would not be the same movie at all.

Someone asks this every year, and every year, the answer is "NO".
If it was a Christmas movie, there would be no doubt.
Fact is, if you took the Christmas decorations out of the film, it would not make one iota of difference. Christmas plays absolutely no part in the film. It's so much a part of the backdrop that it may as well be May.
It's a great film, though. Just not a Christmas movie.
And now that is declared OFFICIAL. Any objections should have been made before I made it OFFICIAL, but now it is OFFICIAL that DIE HARD is NOT a Christmas movie, and that cannot be changed. It's in the books.

John could have still stopped the villains if they all went to a "Valentines Day" or a "Fourth Of July" party. It's a great film, though. Just not a Christmas movie. The only thing I'll agree to, is that fact that setting the BACKDROP of the film at Christmas time, does make it better, than if it had taken place at almost any other time of the year... But it wasn't required to tell the story... A story.. which has NOTHING to do with CHRISTMAS themes. If it had been a Halloween party, the movie might have worked better with the plot about stealing money and killing villians...

I agree it is not a Christmas movie, BUT you are overlooking some things. Hans Gruber picks Christmas Eve because people will be less prepared to deal with it than on almost any other day of the year, it uses Christmas to make the movie more fun and it does have the stuff with him and his wife having relationship problems. The latter plays into Christmas being a family oriented Holiday and at the end of the movie the audience feels that this situation brought him and his wife closer together. In fact I almost equally consider Lethal Weapon a Christmas movie, because it is about the importance of family and friends and how the Holidays are especially depressing without those things. The movie opens with Jingle Bell Rock and ends with Murtaugh inviting Riggs to Christmas dinner.

For me, only in the sense that it happens to take place during Christmastime and has a memorable "Ho ho ho" quote that ties in with the holiday theme. No more than Sudden Death being a hockey movie.
