In a year that also saw Network, Taxi Driver, and All The President's Men nominated for Best picture, Rocky sometimes looks downright naïve.
Carl Weathers brings a memorable charisma to the role of Apollo Creed. I love his reaction when thinking he won the fight only to see Rocky get back on his feet.
Is there actually a book available on just Philadelphia boxers? If so, is this book updated every year to let you know which boxers are retired, up and coming, etc?
Why is January 1st the most celebrated day in the nation's history? Shouldn't it be July 4th?
Did Stallone really drink those raw eggs?
One of the earliest films to use the Steadicam, it does provide for some memorable moments.

Definitely an amazing year for film. Retrospectively I think All the President's Men should have won, but I really think the Academy (and the general population) needed an uplifting film after so many traumatic events earlier in the decade. This was it, even if just as a "symbol."

Resonance with cultural sentiment led to its win over a vastly superior film like Network. The story of an average guy struggling to make it fit with the spirit of the day. In the years after Vietnam and Watergate there was a sense that affairs were managed by big shots and ordinary people were kept back. Jimmy Carter ran for president on that sentiment and he used the Rocky music at rallies.
I found the movie rather schmalzy and the Rocky character unlikable. Supporting figures were hokey caricatures. Despite his vanity, Apollo Creed was more likable.

I like and respect Rocky, but I thought Network and All The Presidents Men were far better movies.

Would the ending have been better if Rocky won or was it fine having him go the distance?

Would the ending have been better if Rocky won or was it fine having him go the distance? It just matters that Rocky went the distance and got the girl. For him, that's winning.

Rocky II is basically Stallone caving in to the people who wanted to see Rocky win the fight from the first film.

Uh, no. You just don't "get" the movie Rocky and you seem a bit dead inside.

The other movies mentioned as nominees are all fine films that are highly respected, even by me. But "Rocky" is loved. It is still loved 42 years later. Visitors still go to Philly to run up the "Rocky steps" and do the victory dance. The Rocky Balboa saga is still going on with a new film this year. "Rocky" has had staying power and is still going strong.
Rocky was not a hit and a Best Picture winner because of the "times" it was made but because it is, in spite of all the claims of sentimentality, naïvety, and superficiality, a great movie because all its elements meshed perfectly into a timeless classic.

Would the ending have been better if Rocky won or was it fine having him go the distance? I think him winning would have been the predictable route to take. Going the distance was victory enough. At least at this stage of his career.

At least at this stage of his career. Yeah that makes sense. I grew to appreciate the ending a lot more after my first viewing in which I was slightly confused and disappointed by what had happened. But now I see things more clearly. It was the better direction to go into rather than just having him win to win.

Yelling 'ROCKY LOSES IN THE END!!' to the people waiting for the next show.. good times.
