As it wraps up the story began in Wrath of Khan, this sequel is probably the most fun out of the series. The fish out of water elements plays well into the Enterprise crew trying to save the whales in 1986 San Francisco. Still not sure how the glasses Kirk sells will still be a gift from McCoy many years later.

The "Glasses will be a gift again" in the future...I think it was someone's way of saying that they were, indeed, in the past and that the gift happens in the future. IE somehow, it is a loop where he actually DID sell the glasses "in the past" and so in the future, the one he actually lived/came from, they will be a gift again. It's just a way, I think, to put the right amount of paradoxical awkwardness in time travel. Because I think they're trying to say he really IS in the past, he is really there and the future that he came from is a future where he had been in the past, not just since we are seeing the story now, but actually. Even trying to say it sounds awkward and I'm sure I'm not expressing it well, but that's how I viewed that comment.

for a futuristic space adventure series, it's slightly odd that one of the best TREK movies takes place on Earth, in the current day.
then again, this is also the case with the classic original series episode, city on the edge of forever.
It must be the appeal of time travel stories, and the balance of familiar and futuristic. In star trek IV much of the humor is derived from it's 'fish out of water' scenario and the cultural clash between old and new.

It's also 1 of only 2 " STAR TREK" Movies (the other being " THE MOTION PICTURE") that doesn't actually have a Main Villain in it.

It's a fun movie with some great humour and plenty of spirit. Much lighter in tone than any of the other entries in the series. The 80s setting does leave it feeling a bit more dated than the other films, however, and the movie lacks the epic grandeur of characteristic of the very best ST movies. I've always believed the success of Back to the Future influenced the direction this movie took.
My rating: 8/10.
I'd place it behind The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country, but ahead of The Search For Spock and The Final Frontier.

The Voyage Home features one of my favorite Star Trek quotes: Dr. Gillian Taylor: Don't tell me! You're from outer space. Kirk: No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space. Which, in turn, inspired a brilliant stroke of municipal promotion. The city of Riverside, Iowa named itself as where James T. Kirk will be born in the future. I am not making this up. If you visit Riverside, you will find this monument:

Easily one of the best Trek movies. After two previous installments that ended on sad notes, it was a change to have a story that's funny with an enjoyable fish out of water aspect.

I like it, especially the part in the hospital with the old lady who grows a new kidney.

I like when Scotty is visiting the guy and picks up the mouse to speak into it: "hello computer."
The alien probe was very Star Treky.
