PREDATOR was an action sci-fi movie with elements that lent themselves to world-building. However, it was also a horror movie that relied on hiding the villain. Whenever we saw him, he wore a mask. We didn't see his face until the last part. How do you make a sequel that expands the mythology but also keeps the element of surprise? I think all you need is the right atmosphere, something THE PREDATOR fails to get right even from the very beginning. It's a sequence that was written, filmed and scored like a space opera (that would be fine if the rest of the movie was like that, but it isn't). The title character doesn't get a visual introduction; he's just... there. No, I'm not being so harsh just because PREDATORS set the bar so high with its opening. While I never felt any of the main characters in this franchise were complex or compelling, this was the first installment where I was rooting against the heroes. The comedic dialogue is unfunny and even kind of dumb, which shocked me considering this was co-written and directed by Shane Black. Speaking of, this movie, just like KISS KISS BANG BANG and THE NICE GUYS, shows moments of violence and/or pain in a nonchalant way. The difference is that those 2 movies did it for laughs, while this one seems to be serious about it. It comes off as awkward (especially when a certain character on top a bus falls down), just like the editing in some scenes. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I didn't think this film was too bad, but it did have some problems... Shane Black's dumb comedic dialog for one... The comedic dialogue is unfunny and even kind of dumb, which shocked me considering this was co-written and directed by Shane Black. Yes, I'll agree with you on that opinion. I'm not sure what happened there... And yes, for some reason, I was expecting him to take making this film more seriously... But, there was a lot more to this movie that his dumb comedic dialog... and I focused on that stuff... a horror movie that relied on hiding the villain. Whenever we saw him, he wore a mask. We didn't see his face until the last part. How do you make a sequel that expands the mythology but also keeps the element of surprise? What surprise? Doesn't everyone know already that they are " Ugly Motherfuckers"... I think all you need is the right atmosphere, something THE PREDATOR fails to get right even from the very beginning. PREDATOR S set the bar so high with its opening. You what to know what I think?... Every "Motherfucker" (Pun Intended) who constantly bitches about these sequels... Actually believes that the first Predator film, "set the bar so high", and therefore, they have placed the movie on such a "high pedestal", it should actually be stamped with an embossed label which decrees it to be "the best film ever made"... And so, NO SEQUEL will ever satisfy their unrealistic expectations that it could be as good as the first... Face The Facts.... They never will be "as good as the first"! If you can't just sit down with some popcorn and just have some fun with these films for a couple of hours, then stop watching them. Speaking of, this movie, just like KISS KISS BANG BANG and THE NICE GUYS, shows moments of violence and/or pain in a nonchalant way. The difference is that those 2 movies did it for laughs, while this one seems to be serious about it. WTF are you talking about? I've never seen those films... And there are probably a lot of other people who saw this movie, that never saw them either... Maybe YOUR problems with this film, are because you are comparing it with other movie franchises... When Shane Black made this movie, he didn't intend for the audience to do that!... If you wanted more "KISS KISS BANG BANG" & "THE NICE GUYS", you should have just watched those films again... The rest of us saw "The Predator", because it was a sequel to "Predator", and it featured another adventure of Humans fighting Predators... You should only rank "The Predator" based on other Predator films...

We have a separate board for Predator movies. It's in the popular movie franchises section.

And I only said that the opening scene set the bar high. I'm confused. I'm only supposed to compare it to the other movies in the franchise, but I can't dislike it if it's inferior in comparison? For the record, I don't like the 1987 movie that much, so my expectations weren't unrealistically high. It's not that I wanted this movie to be like Shane's crime comedies, but he tried to add that style to this franchise. I'm simply using movie history (those 2 movies are cult classics after all) to provide context on how the writer/director usually works.

I liked the comedy. Some of it was funny AF, like when they were taking bets on whether Olivia Munn would go for the shotgun or if she’d pull the trigger.
So many modern movies would have a 110-lb woman like Munn beat the piss out of a room full of men, even war veterans, because OMG GRRRL POWER!!
That scene showed precisely how they would have handled her in real life. It was a joke to them. They’re not going to leave a loaded weapon anywhere near someone they don’t trust.
What I found disappointing was the Predators. How many times are they gonna introduce new, upgraded “super predators”? Are the originals not badass enough? They did the same thing with Predators, which was an otherwise pretty solid movie. It’s never a good idea to downgrade your original antagonist, especially one as iconic as the Predator.
