...and NOT have a reaction like they do in the movies?
I dunno how they do that with hard liquor. (Because it's water.) I either have to mix it, sip it or have a chaser if it all goes in one gulp.

Maybe with fire whiskey, at least the cinnamon masks the taste a bit

I like that moment in The Wild Bunch when a bottle of booze is passed until Warren Oates only gets an empty bottle.

Maybe in the old west they watered down the whiskey. It must have been pretty hard to get at times.

No. I just chalk it up to more bullshit they show in movies that doesn't line up with reality.

It depends how used to it you are. I used to only drink bourbon and I loved it. After a while, I could drink it straight and it would be nothing to me. I could seriously just swig down the bottle. I pretty much quit drinking bourbon a few years ago. Now if I take a swig it burns. I am no longer used to it.

No. I just chalk it up to more bullshit they show in movies that doesn't line up with reality. If you drink it more often it goes down smoother.

I was a very heavy drinker earlier in life, mostly vodka or whiskey. I could skull it pretty effectively (unless it was warmer than room temp) after a few years.
I gag (still) at the slightest taste of gin or fireball. So I guess it's sort of a learned skill. Hell, I only have the occasional drink now that I'm older, but I can still slam a flask of whiskey if I'm out golfing or something.
Something ridiculous like Belushi in "Animal House" is way over the top. I'm sure there's someone out there who could do it (saw it failed attempts many times in college), but they'd be beet-red, instantly sweaty, and probably coughing violently.

Who knows but I don't gulp alcohol quickly since I drink for taste not to get wasted as even if I have some 80 proof type of stuff I tend to sip it for the flavor etc out of say a shot glass on the occasion I drink it straight.

I don't understand what the protocol is for doing shots. Are you supposed to down it quickly or sip it? I guess it depends on who you are and where you are. At home alone, do what you want. With friends if someone buys them, down them fast.

With friends if someone buys them, down them fast. Mostly depends on the quality...or at least the perceived quality. I say do what you want. Snobs like to tell me to drink my whisky slower so as to savor the flavor...but if I’m buying cheap whisky with the idea of getting drunk I don’t need to stop and smell the roses.

WarrenPeaceOn a personal level... I drink for taste, NOT to get drunk. I never understood the appeal of getting drunk as I don't mind a mild buzz but after a certain point ill simply back off as I don't like the feeling. I have never been wasted in my entire life even though I have had a decent buzz going here and there. so that would apply to me whether the drinks are free or not which is why I tend to sip shots etc if it's strong although I am sure when someone thinks about 'doing shots' it's going to be one gulp and swallow for most people I would assume. so yeah, I would assume most people would 'down it quickly' when it comes to shots. but I suspect these people are more concerned with getting drunk than for taste.
