Curly (Michael Sarrazin), an army-deserter jumps onto a train only to see an old man getting thrown off it. Curly helps the man - Mortdecai Jones (George.C.Scott), spruce up and soon finds himself under the man's influence. Jones is a fast talking small time con man who goes around small towns cheating people. Together, the two of them go around conning small town folk using card tricks and other hilarious pranks. While their schemes are all pretty small, they are really fun. The small town where the film is set is really beautiful with its stucco houses, ferries, tiny bridges over creeks and abundant backwoods for the two con men to hide in.
The film portrays small town folk and policemen as total imbeciles. The picaresque adventures of the two con men are celebrated while the square life is looked down upon. At the beginning of the film, when Jones sees Curly's house - an abandoned boat at the shore of a stream he says "People spend their whole lives working to go on holiday in a place like this."
Sue Lyons plays a small town girl whose sports car is stolen by Curly and Jones. She turns Curly against his mentor and has a few scenes. But she was nowhere as interesting as the adventures of the two men. This film was great fun, overall. George.C.Scott's performance does not really work at times with the shoddy make up and indecipherable dialog delivery. But the earnest Michael Sarrazin is very entertaining. Slim Pickens (Dr.Strangelove and The Getaway) steals the show in a brief role.
(7.5/10)

Seen it many years ago. Entertaining but not great. Interersting too, that I remember questioning about George C. Scott's make-up.
