Okay so I've been doing a DC marathon. I started with Burton's Batman, continued with Schumacher, then Nolan's.
Here is the thing. I was always pretty sure that I had seen the Superman movies as a kid, or I had never seen them and just knew so much about them from the fact that they are so iconic.
I finally sat down and watched Superman tonight.
I had NOT seen it like I originally thought. But having seen it now... it was truly PHENOMENAL.
And listen.. I'm the kind of person that doesn't like older movies like that unless I grew up with them. But I was ENTHRALLED.
Superman (1978) is a true milestone for the superhero genre, and I regret not having grown up with it. Bravo.

I didn’t see it until recently like a couple years ago myself. Yeah it’s a classic.

I like the movie, I just think the villains let it down somewhat especially the bumbling one.

I know what Superman II is about though and it's awesome that they set up the villains for that in the first one.

I know what Superman II is about though and it's awesome that they set up the villains for that in the first one. Both films started out as being filmed at the same time, and the first film was supposed to end in a cliff hanger, which would then get resolved in the second film... There were money problems during production as well as problems between director Richard Donner and the Producers... About 3/4 of both films were shot, when it was decided to stop production on the second film, and to focus on finishing the first film... Some changes were made, and the film inherited the Superman II "Richard Donner Cut" "Super" Ending, so it wouldn't end in a cliff hanger... and Superman I was released in 1978. When it was successful at the theaters, production resumed on the Second Film... Unfortunately, the Producers couldn't resolve their issues with Richard Donner and then fired him. Richard Lester was tasked to finish the second film. However, for Richard Lester to have full director's credit on the film, He was required to have shot at least 51% of it... And so, the Second film received some story changes and re-shoots... As well as a NEW ending, that wasn't the same one as seen in Superman I Superman II was then released in theaters in 1980. The "Richard Donner Cut" is a reworking of what "Richard Donner" had shot, and mixed with some of "Richard Lester" scenes to create, as close as possible, to the original Superman II film that was supposed to have been completed back in 1978. It's NOT perfect. And there is a major continuity error at the end of the film... But it is interesting to see what it could have been.

The majority of the film has aged rather well. I loved the scenes in Smallville and later when he's in Metropolis the most.

I'm glad you liked it. I must have seen that film more times than I can count.

The only thing that bothered me was that they always put Zod in the Phantom Zone, making it possible for him to escape. Wouldn't keeping him on Krypton to die with the planet be a more fitting punishment? I thought the same thing when I watched MOS.

The Kryptonian council didn't believe Krypton was going to explode. Also, no one had ever escaped from the Phantom Zone before. It was believed that escape from the Phantom Zone was impossible and eternal imprisonment as basically a phantom (or ghost) in the Phantom Zone was considered a fate worse than death.

The score is wonderful. The Henry Cavill film should have had some of it. And the suit too.
