The theory, held by some, is that it’s several different killers responsible for the murders, and the letters are all phonies. I read this claim at a couple of places, including I think someone on imdbv2, on the Soapbox a few months back, also said this.

I think that is also a possible theory for some of The Jack The Ripper & The Boston Strangler cases...
Many details of those Killers' M.O.s were leaked through the press...
If you know the details of those killings, then it wouldn't be hard for other killers to make their Killings/Murders look like they were just another one of the serial killer's...
Wasn't The Boston Stranger tying scarves around their victims necks?
You murder someone, then tie a scarf around their neck, and there you go...

There's a reason the Zodiac letters were taken so seriously. He knew intimate details about the killings only the police knew.
Not to mention he also sent bloody pieces of his last murder victim's shirt within the letters as well.

I've heard of it, but I don't buy it. Like Jack the Ripper, there are some crimes attributed to Zodiac that he may well didn't commit, but as far as the main four, Faraday/Jensen, Ferrin/Mageau, Shepard/Hartnell and Paul Stine, I do believe one person is responsible for those.
