And after it happened and the iconic farewell at the end: I re-state they did exactly what they should have done. The biggest star in the company retired a legend and left him in the ring to say goodbye. Cena didn't retire the Undertaker.

Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Steve Austin, The Rock all went out on their backs: why should the Undertaker be any different? Austin walked out. So, he didn't go out on his back.
Last match for the Rock so far... The Rock defeats Erick Rowan (0:06) WWE WrestleMania 32 @ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA
Vince had the Undertaker job to a wrestler no one wants to be at the top.
That is why they boo him all the time.

Austin lost to The Rock in his last match.

He walked out.
Austin might have lost some money, but his net worth is big enough.
Stone Austin's Net Worth as of 2017: $45 Million. Stone Cold's net worth arrives at an impressive $45 million, significantly topping his former foe Triple H and even besting the highest paid performer in the WWE, John Cena.

The Rock's last real match he lost to Cena. Austin's last match he lost to The Rock. Reigns is clearly positioned as the top guy in the company and was the clear choice to send out The Undertaker.
Given the WWE brought in over $700 million last year that's not a strategy that's hurting them. If you don't like it then stop watching, but I doubt you'll be missed.

hoskotafe3 I don't watch WWE live any more. I might watch a few things briefly online. But, the WWE has lost popularity and money.

This isn't debatable. The Rock beat him in his last match in 2003.

I am not debating you. I told you the truth. Listen to the audio.

I am not debating you. I told you the truth. Listen to the audio. I've heard that before. It changes nothing. You keep saying Austin "walked out" as if that changes the fact that he KNOWINGLY decided to put Rock over in his last match. Both Rock and Austin knew going into the match that this was it for him. And in the end, Austin went out on his back (which is what you're arguing against for some strange reason).

Whether Austin "walked out" is immaterial. The man lost his final match.

Whether Austin "walked out" is immaterial. The man lost his final match. This. And both him and Rock knew that was probably it for him. So it was very much a "go out on your back" moment, no matter how you wanna slice it.

But, the WWE has lost popularity and money. The "lost money" part is totally false.

And none of those have anything to do with Roman Reigns. Hulk Hogan making a racist comment, shareholder scepticism at the launch of WWE Network which also led to a reduced TV rights deal, and a two year stock drop from 2010-11 have nothing at all to do with Reigns. And in 2016, when this awful cancer was being "shoved down your throat" and killing business, WWE grossed 720+ million.
