Birth of a Nation.
The movie was TOO brutal to be sure, had a truth in it that was too unpalatable for a mass audience, and came too soon after other similar movies (12 years a slave and Selma).
But those weren't the reasons it ended up being shunned. And that's a shame. Other directors movies have gone on to great acclaim even though the director was accused of something. Polanski anyone?

But IMO he should have gotten BOTH.

The Exorcist of course did well with the public and critics, but The Sting pushed it aside at the Academy Awards. Friedkin's movie didn't win any top-tier Oscar.

How Do You Know (2010), directed by James L. Brooks, starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson. Sounds like a winner, right? Except it wasn't funny or entertaining, just long and boring. I blame this film for driving Nicholson into an early retirement.
