Or third, fourth, etc... (I just couldn't fit it all on the subject line)
"La Grande Illusion" is the first one that comes to mind. I think part of it was watching it as such an early time (5am) and on this VHS from the library, it was not only grainy, but the subtitles almost matched the b&w movie itself. I later saw it on TCM and it's a Top 20 of mine.
"Straw Dogs" must have been too dark for me 20 years ago, and even 15 years ago, but I enjoyed it very much a couple of years ago, 8/10.

I had different feelings during the first viewing.. I was very close to turning it off (I thought Anita Ekberg should have been removed along with the other baloney, constant chasing, yelling FRANKIE, etc).... but later I thought better of it, until the very decadent ending. I saw it again the next day, and thought 7/10 , but I really like Marcello Mastroianni

A Christmas Story--I didn't get it at first, until I realized I had to see it from a little kid's perspective.
Peewee's Big Adventure--What I thought was just a goofy, manic comedy at first was really clever in its homage to classic movies; worth seeing over and over again.

Oh, there have been a few such films.
Phantasm (1979)
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
I also enjoyed Batman Begins and The Avengers more on my second viewing of those titles.

Apocalypse Now 2001
(when I 1st saw both of these, I was at too young of an age to fully appreciate the brilliance of these classic films. Thought they were too tedious and boring . Now I've seen them both a number of times over the years and am in total awe of both of them)
