The Oscars have always been political. The award for Hattie McDaniel in GONE WITH THE WIND was political.
Any art contest is political and subjective.
There is just much less finesse about it these days.

Unworthy films have always been nominated, but not that unworthy.

Set the genre back? Lol, you complete and utter bell end. Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and X-Men Apocalypse were absolute garbage and would have totally sank the genre forever had it not been for the genius of Civil War, but you choose to go after Black Panther? By the way, the Oscars don't mean shit. Never has, never will. You need to stop portraying your opinion as the general consensus.

Edit: Hell, if that won an Oscar, why not Black Panther? To the general audiences it was a rather so-so movie. That version of Harley Quinn is unquestionably popular.

Black panthers farcical nomination for the most presitgous award in cinematic recognition has destroyed the credibility of the superhero genre, the Oscars themselves and set back its reputation a decade +, back to when the dark knight should have been the first nominated, all in 1 swoop.
It is a mediocre movie, don't care about its high rotten tomatoe %, that's an aggregate. This damages the genre as a whole for now and forever, not just mcu fans. Casual fans will see the news of black panthers nomination and decide to watch it out of interest, and split in laughter how this average movie got nominated. Young children not yet born will see black panther for the first time in 20 years and wonder how the hell it was the first supehero movie ever to get picked. Film purists who see superhero movies as the killer of cinema will never forgive the academy for such an unmerited selection. If the Dark knight or logan were the first to be initiated with this honour, then we wouldn't see any negative response by all crowds involved, present and future. The genre would remain somewhat respected, now its all pissed away. and for what, ratings? self riightous approval. black acceptance. Blame the fanatics who threatned critics over negative reviews when it first came out
One piece of evidence that black panther is a PITY NOMINATION
Black panther is the only entrée in the Best Picture catergory to not get any other nominations in the main categories. That means Black Panther didn't have any cast members considered worthy for Best Actor/Actresses or Best Supporting Actor/Actress. The story wasn't worthy of being picked for Best Adapated Screenplay. The camerawork was not good enough to be selected for Best Cinematography. The editing wasn't good enough to be picked for Best Film Editing. The direction wasn't good enough for Coogler to be nominated for Best Director.
SO HOW DOES BLACK PANTHER DESERVE A BEST PICTURE NOM This is still equal parts sad and hilarious. Black Panther is the only entrée? Somebody call PETA!
