or uncomfortable?
Ones with images of scared, abandoned or caged animals, or ones with afflicted people living in horrible conditions in the Third World?

The Shriners one with the same kid year after year, the army/navy ones, & the caged animals. These unfortunately exist, yet the cynical side of me says any donation is not going to them.

Both make a bit uncomfortable. Also a bit mad. Mad at the average Joe for not being aware of the situation, Mad at the group trying to raise money but not actually doing anything to help and Mad at whoever or whatever the cause is.

Animals. Because they're so helpless and totally dependent on people.
Children next because they're in a similar position. But the difference is that if a person has to help a child or a dog they're probably going to help the child, and rightly so, I suppose.
The worst is when animals are abused. I never understand how a person could do that to an animal, especially ones like cats and dogs who are so subservient to us. People who hurt animals should have the book thrown at them the same way as if they'd hurt a person. A person who hurts an animal is only one little step removed from hurting people. Something's deeply wrong with you if you enjoy the pain and suffering of living beings.
My household does contribute to animal charities, but its probably a drop in the ocean though.

And that's exactly why I don't understand how people fall for this shit. Isn't it fucking OBVIOUS?!?!? What's wrong with people? Are they really that stupid?
Look at him! He even LOOKS like a slick snake-oil salesman! WTF? He belongs on a used car lot!

About 10 years ago, I read an article about how a kitten was thrown out of a moving car. Pictures showed that the cute and adorable kitten was covered in scars... I wanted to lynch the person from the tallest tree for doing that!
And people who set their pets on fire? They are just pure evil "things" that deserve to disposed of by being dropped into a vat of acid...
These wonderful creatures should never have to face such cruelty and evil...
As for the dumb fuckers who continue to insist on living in a desert where crops won't grow... I don't feel sorry for them being hungry.

sweetpeaYeah, I would be cautious of donations in general because I am pretty sure some places the actual amount you donate to what actually goes to the cause is much less than it should be where as some others a high percentage of what you donate goes to the actual cause which is what it should be. because if I am going to donate, I want damn near all of the money donated to go to the actual cause and not like half or some BS like that. because while I realize there are costs of running the charity to keep it open, I think there is a difference between just enough to keep it afloat (good and about what it should be because this way donation are going to the actual cause and not to line some greedy persons pocket etc) vs someone getting fairly rich off of it (bad).

Give to your local animal shelter instead of some anonymous charity on TV or which contacts you in the mail or by phone. You might not be saving the world, but you are helping to better your corner of the world, and you can see where your money goes. Better yet, volunteer if you can, it's worth as much, maybe more. Being surrounded by puppies and kittens all day sounds good to me.

Being surrounded by puppies and kittens all day sounds good to me. Yes, you're better off looking for some local charity to donate some money or some volunteer time instead of these ads on TV. I don't trust any charity that sends you a T-shirt and "a photo of an animal" or some such token; you'll only end up getting more and more mail and phone solicitations from every related charity which will only make you feel guilty for not giving more and more. The kids in the Shriners commercials don't make me sad, though; they look like they're coping well and doing all kinds of activities (while many of their non-disabled contemporaries are lying on the couch all day playing Fortnite) and the commercials aren't maudlin. They really have to update the commercials with Alex, however; he's at least 16 by now, with an adult speaking voice, and they're still showing him as a little kid, plugging the "adowable" blanket.

Animals. I can't afford to give much these days--the last time I gave a little to one big org and they sent me so much printed mail it made the donation pointless.
I also donated to a local shelter.

Being an animal lover, and cat lover in particular, I hate seeing images of frightened, abandoned animals. However, part of me is always thinking that if an animal is old enough, sooner or later it will revert to instincts and figure out how to fend for itself. I mean, how many birds do domestic cats massacre every year?

Being surrounded by puppies and kittens all day sounds good to me. I usually give $5 - $10 every so often to non-profits for animals since they send me a calendar once a year along with some return address labels, but hell if I know what they actually do once they receive the donation. They gotta be paying somebody to print and manufacture everything. Probably not cheap at all.
Oh, and those televangelists are crooks. I vaguely remember what Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker were doing once the news reported their nice mansion and brand new cars. I never once bought into their crap.
