rewatched A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS today morning. frankly LEONE's films have a great beginning and end that completely overshadows everything that happens in the middle. the beginning scene at the well is awesome. themanwithnoname drinks water while the drama involving the kid unfolds in front of him. his entry into the small town with the camera placed behind him and his exotic dark green blanket top in focus with the arid small town as the background is beautiful. the subsequent shootout with the baxter goons underscores what a badass he is. i guess it must have been thrilling watching it for the first time in a movie theater without knowing what would happen next. it is a great buildup with themanwithnoname looking like a wimp after the baxter goons scare his horse and he hangs on to a pole with the bartender staring at him pitifully. the final shootout which involves a great point of view shot is also awesome. but like i said, the beginning and the end are leagues ahead of everything that happens in the middle. i think the dubbing from italian to english must have affected the film a little bit. also couldnt digest the great gian maria volante playing a dumb bandit. the background score, sets, cinematography and costumes are all of the highest quality. i will never tire of repeating the fact that morricone is a genius and took LEONE films to another level of greatness. the film looks beautiful on blu ray. this is my least favorite film in the dollar trilogy.
(7.5/10)

I thought it was really good.
I'm positive Yojimbo was better, but I'm wrestling with that being a consequence of having seen Yojimbo first. First impressions are important, so on two levels Yojimbo impressed me with the movie that it was, and A Fistful of Dollars (through no fault of its own) unimpressed me by being a send up of Yojimbo.
But at the same time, it was really good, and I really can't rule out the possibility that I'd prefer it to Yojimbo if I'd seen it first. Through no effort of my own, I knew everything that was going to happen because of Yojimbo.
Still, it's a great western that I'd recommend to anybody.

The most fun of the Dollars trilogy, I rank it 2nd behind Few Dollars. GBU is too long & not as tense or fun as those.
