this horror film had a lot going for it.
the plot - though preposterous, is quite interesting. a killer is stalking a girl's hostel during christmas break. he makes strange phone calls to the hostel phone involving guttural cries of violence and sexual frenzy. soon, it is revealed that the killer is living inside the hostel but the police figure this out only towards the end when they trace his calls.
characterization - two great alcoholic female characters. one played by MARGOT KIDDER. the other by the elderly MARIAN WALDMAN who has brandy hidden everywhere. the beautiful and vulnerable looking OLIVIA HUSSEY plays a bullied girlfriend.
it is a good police procedural - JOHN SAXON plays the cop who is investigating the murders. the film gets really suspenseful towards the end when they discover that that the killer is inside the hostel itself.
the ending - the ending where olivia hussey kills her bullying boyfriend thinking he is the killer was pretty clever. but the real killer is roaming around in the attic. and she is in the hostel sedated.
but it is not without its faults. the plot points are not always well developed. the phone calls get tiring after sometime. the film is not scary at all. it never really rises above a certain level.
(6/10)
