Wow, still amazing. Every bit as good as I remembered it. Now THAT'S a god damn Oscar worthy movie, unlike this ridiculous Black Panther nonsense we have these days.

Yeah, but it's not often they choose the right movie in my mind as even if I strictly stick to the nominated movies, and ONLY ones I personally score a 6-6.5/10 or higher, the only years I agreed with the winner are (from newest to oldest)...
-The Godfather (1972) (it's also my #1 movie of 1972 straight up and within my Top 185 movies in general) -The Godfather Part II (1974) (it's also my #1 movie of 1974 straight up and within my Top 185 movies in general) -Rain Man (1988) (it's also either my #1 or #2 movie of 1988 straight up and within my Top 99 movies in general) -Braveheart (1995) (it's also my #1 movie of 1995 straight up and within my Top 8 movies in general) -Gladiator (2000) (it's also my #1 movie of 2000 straight up and within my Top 50 movies in general) -The Departed (2006) (it's my #8 movie of 2006 straight up and within my Top 185 movies in general) -La La Land (2016) (it's my #2 or #3 movie of 2016 straight up and within my Top 232 movies in general)
my most recent re-watch of Rain Man (1988) is Aug 7th 2017.
with that said... the best picture nominee's are getting weaker lately the more political they get. hell, just looking at ALL of the Best Picture Nominee's of the 2010's decade, here are the only ones of any real worth if you ask me... True Grit (2010)/The Descendants (2011)/Django Unchained (2012)/Nebraska (2013)/La La Land (2016). so, at least early in the decade, they had one stand out movie from the nominee's per year but after 2013 things went downhill in general and about 2017/2018 things got further political and the quality of the nominated pictures took a hit because of it. but then again, in all honesty, if we strictly look at 2010 to date... I would say after the year of 2015, it started becoming noticeably harder to find movies that stand out from the pack in general as every single year between 2010-2015 gave me AT LEAST 5 movies I scored a 7 or higher PER YEAR but once 2016 on forward arrived nothing has exceeded 2 movies based on that standard in a given year with two out of the three years (i.e. 2016 through 2018) being just one movie I scored a 7 or higher in the given year. NOTE: if I put aside 2014, which is the weakest year between 2010-2015 for me, all other years gave me at least eight movies I scored a 7 or higher. so that gives you general perspective on how overall weak movies have gotten lately. for measure... there is only 185 movies out of the 2,250+ total movies I have seen in general. so as you can see I don't hand out 7's and higher all that often and I don't restrict ratings on movies either as it's simply about how much I enjoy them and I score accordingly.
p.s. Die Hard (1988) is about tied with Rain Man (1988) for my #1 movie of that year and here is the rest of my #1 movies in general for those years above where the Oscar Winner was not my #1 movie of the year straight up... Nocturnal Animals (2016)/Find Me Guilty (2006).

LOL) but I agree with you on this. Barry Levinson is one of the great directors. Up there with Scorsese and the best of the class. He has directed a lot of great movies and this is one of them and could be his best. (If not, then perhaps The Natural. Check it out. Best baseball movie.) You don't need superhero shit, special effects and CGI to make a fine movie and Rain Man is a perfect example of this. It is a perfect movie in my book.

The whole world except MCU fanatics realise that Black Panther nomination for one of the best 8 films of 2018 is a complete sham. It doesn't hold a candle to something like Rain Man
