Have any of you ever done this?
And by restaurant I mean the kind of place you'd, say, take a date to. I don't mean some small-town diner.

Yes. I do it almost weekly.I usually pack lunch, but once a week – sometimes twice – I like to go out and get some human interaction. I usually sit at the bar.

Yeah of course, sometimes you just want to try out a restaurant. If you're traveling alone this is a given.

The last time I did that the waiter asked me if anyone was joining me and I said no and I got a funny look, so I felt awkward the whole time.

Or, tell 'em Zolotoy the Retriever from 3rd Planet from the Sun is joining you. I'd be happy to meet anybody at a restaurant... for a free meal. LOL

For me its a little awkward. There's NOTHING wrong with it, I know that intellectually, but it still feels a little weird.
I've finally gotten over my hesitation to go to movie theatres alone, and only because since I go see so many movies I cant always get someone to come along. But even that feels a little "unusual". I don't know why. It just does.
As for the restaurant specifically, its not like eating at a fast food place. I'll eat at a fast place alone anytime, though usually I'd get it to go. But at an actual "sit down and be waited on" restaurant? Hmmm. I don't know... lol

I don't always feel like cooking. And I don't always want company. But, I don't feel like eating alone at home. (Or I don't have time to go home.)

No, because there is always an asshole around who thinks a woman sitting alone wants his company.

No, because there is always an asshole around who thinks a woman sitting alone wants his company. That is the double edged sword of being attractive. At least you are attractive. How would you feel if no man ever wanted to talk with you?

Why in the world would I NOT do this? Just because I am alone, doesn't mean I am lonely. I prefer to read when I dine...

They seem to like to seat the solitary diners near a window so the outside world can see that they are alone.

Sometimes wait-staff can be a little annoyed with a one-diner table, because it will mean less of a tip. A table with 2 or 3 people usually isn't that much more work for them, yet it guarantees them a much bigger tip than what a solitary table would pay (there are exceptions, but this is generally true). As such, sometimes if you are alone at a table you just might get short shrift treatment from the wait-staff.

Don't think I've ever eaten alone at a "nice" restaurant. Plenty of times at cafes, diners, cheaper restaurants.
