I have heard of people fighting with swords in battles but I must confess I haven't heard of people fighting with warhammers in a battle. I wonder if there are instances from real history when knights fought with warhammers? Returning to the GOT and the books - While Robert's warhammer is still famous in Essos and known to be the weapon that shattered the breastplate of Rhaegar not much has been mentioned about it since he died. I remember Joff boasting about it once but it's not been in conversation lately. Maybe because not many fight with a hammer? Probably it was not of much use to the Lannisters. Though Gendry character is now using Warhammer forged by himself.

Martin giving a warhammer to Robert was likely to show him as a tempestuous strongman. To him everything looked like a nail, lol
A quick Wikipedia search shows they were used in real medieval Europe in order to get through heavy armour, so the fight between Robert and Rhaegar, seems accurate.

Wikipedia: They were roughly the size of a normal hammer and their main target were helmets. The spike was aimed at joints. Piercing elsewhere could be a bad idea as the spike could remain stuck. Martin's depiction of devastating blows to a rib cage is his usual fantasy nonsense.

The mace is the older weapon. Savages used it to kill lions in Holland:
