What are some of your favourite director-author relationships in cinema? 'An author is the creator or originator of any written work such as a book or play, and is thus also a writer. More broadly defined, an author is "the person who originated or gave existence to anything" and whose authorship determines responsibility for what was created.'
- Google
The author doesn't need to have given their blessing for a project, or in any way participated. With deceased authors this would obviously be harder to achieve. I'm just thinking of how some film directors return to certain poets, short story writers, novelists and playwrights for inspiration. These unions have provided a large portion of cinema. The film industry has always looked towards literature for inspiration. Using poet & playwright William Shakespeare as an example, several directors I can think of have made multiple adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, leading to much debate about which filmmaker is the greatest interpreter of Shakespeare's work in cinema. There are also films that are believed to be thinly veiled adaptations of Shakepeare plays applied to different time periods and settings. Some living authors take a hands-on approach to adapting their own work. Some put their own stories into screenplay form, some direct the film themselves. There are also those authors who cite certain directors they trust more to realise their creations on screen. What are some of your favourite director-author unions in cinema? Thanks.

It was kind of odd that after making The Outsiders Francis Ford Coppola made another S.E. Hinton adaptation, Rumble Fish.

Great topic.. My guess is that more and more movies are NOT using novels (or at least, not anything great).
