Seeing Taxi Driver on TCM, Friday with Cybil Shepard reminded me that I needed to see The Last Picture Show, so I watched it and it's not very good. It's painfully slow paced and boring. No real story, just a collection of random, mostly depressing scenes with some age disparity porn thrown in. Let's get real, Cybil Shepard looked great and is the only real reason to watch this, also familiar faces like Jeff Bridges, Randy Quaid and Clu Gulagher from Return of the Living Dead are in it. Come at me, bro!

I respectfully disagree. I think it's a very good movie. The pace of the movie sets the mood and reflects living in a small, dying town. But I was never bored watching it. 8/10

It needs a re-watch because when I first watched it, I was bored watching it. Ben Johnson's performance was good, but nothing really held my interest.

It really is a boring film, but it does capture the bleakness of living in a small town. Also, it has some really good performances, especially by the lead Timothy Bottoms. I believe that was his first role, if I'm not mistaken. And also Ellen Burstyn.

I think it's a strong contender for greatest American film of the '70s.

I think it's a strong contender for greatest American film of the '70s. And that would be many from this marvelous decade. I would also rank Robert Altman's 3 Women - 77' up there as well. Yep, 3 Women is definitely decade top ten material, along with Altman's Nashville.

Yep, 3 Women is definitely decade top ten material, along with Altman's Nashville. I am not as sold on Nashville, but that would perhaps be the milieu and it has been yonks since I last viewed. Honestly, I can't stand country music and I think that put me off watching Nashville for quite a long time. Once I finally sat down to it, though, I was enthralled. I find it completely dazzling on every level, hugely entertaining throughout and I even tolerate the music!

Come at me, bro! TLPS is damn fine film and a slice of Americana that hadn't been portrayed before in the context of the era it was made. The performances, the mood, the atmosphere, the nuances, the secret is all hidden in the sauce. This was a landmark film, and the 70's was a watershed era for fine cinema.
It wasn't made to entertain on a visceral level, but most discerning and intelligent filmgoers would realize this. It is also a movie that is academically studied by university film students. Oh, I'm quite aware it's a respected movie, that's why I sought it out in the first place. I happen to be a discerning, intelligent filmgoer who didn't like it. Deal with it.
