It turns out that he was not demanding a producer's credit nor was he wanting to approve of the writer and script before signing onto a hypothetical Man of Steel 2. In light of that Shazam! spoiler that makes sense.

Not continuing with Superman movies is the single biggest mistake they could have ever made. Period. Even bigger than no Batman, even bigger that letting Cavill and Affleck go, even bigger than giving up on a shared universe.
Everybody calls the DCEU, and the MCU, one franchise. But that's not really accurate. Each individual characters set of movies are their own individual franchise. For DCEU Superman is now one less franchise under its belt.
And the biggest thing is that it's not Cavill's fault. He didn't fuck up Superman. And its not like there haven't been directors showing interest in it. We've all heard the rumors.
Superman starring Cavill with a new director and a solid story would kick as much ass as Aquaman just did. They're dropping the ball.

Their movies might suck, but I think he's a good Superman. I never had a problem with his portrayal of the character at all.

Well, I will say this, they do seem to make their decisions based on fear of previous failures, as opposed to making decisions based on putting together solid packages aimed to succeed. (hee hee he said package lol).
Here's my proposed package for success: Cavill as Superman. A solid screenplay fully completed and re-jiggered before they even greenlight the movie. A solid director actually interested in doing a heroic version of the character. And a budget of no less than 150 million, with wiggle room of up to, but no more than, 200 million based on said solid script.
Period. Wtf is the problem?

As mentioned before I do think it’s simply a lack of imagination on their part. They really haven’t a clue about what direction they want to go and stick with. As underwhelming that may sound, the suits don’t read the comics or keep up with how Superman has changed since the Reeve days or to a lesser extent, the days when Death of Superman was really hyped up. They don’t know about any other villains besides Lex Luthor or General Zod. They just see the big blue boy scout. As Nalkarj deftly pointed out, he’s more complex than that. But to hit the nail on the head, they have no idea what to do next.

MCU is one franchise, the DCEU use to be one franchise that's now fractured. The "individual" character movies are just point of view of the larger story. Thinking of each character as a franchise is the old way of thinking about it. You're looking at it like Superman has the Donnerverse, Batman has the Burtonverse, Spider-man has the Raimiverse. The DCEU is the Snyderverse that is now breaking up. The MCU is... well the MCU. The MCU is not an umbrella for smaller franchises.

But to hit the nail on the head, they have no idea what to do next. That and I think Marvel in the early 2000s broke them. If you really think about it, most of the DC movies aren't all that good. We liked them because they were the big thing with no competition. DC really only had the 1st 2 Superman movies, Batman '89, then a long lull. WB had a psuedo-Justice League hit with The Matrix. After that they became followers besides Batman Begins. And even then people had complaints: Batman Begins fights are too close, TDK was just a detective movie (Batman is a detective...), TDKR... Bane. Their current run (starting with Green Lantern then Man of Steel) is just them capitalizing on Iron Man, the Nolan movies and Avengers.
