Ghost in the Shell? I personally had never seen the anime nor knew nothing about it, until now. I saw the movie last night and besides some pacing issues in the first couple acts, I was pleased.
Scarlet was great as usual, if not dull at times but still fit the part as far as dialogue.
I gave it a 8/10, great action, superb visuals, decent story, I see this "could" be a new cult classic in the making. Hope no one yells at me for that.

I thought it was decent but I'm not familiar with the source material. Visually compelling while the story itself was somewhat lacking. It wasn't terrible in that regard, I just felt like it scratched the surface of several concepts without diving into them. There could have easily been another 20 minutes of runtime to flesh things out a little more. Characterization, world building, existentialism; everything. What we got wasn't bad, but it needed a lot more.

What about the "whitewashing" issue? Did you think that contributed poorly to the movie?

i absolutely adore Ghost in the Shell. i consider the original film a Science Fiction masterpiece, right up there with Blade Runner and 2001. i didn't trust Hollywood with the material so went into it with extreme pessimism.
i ended up liking it. kind of a lot, actually. it was a bit clumsy in parts and basically unnecessary but taken as a whole i am pleased. i plan to buy a copy when it's released on video, though i'm not sure how often i'll want to view it in lieu of the animation.

For me (please don't throw fruit or veggies at me) it's this year's Blade Runner. I liked it a lot enough to add to my collection (whenever it hits Blu Ray) with repeat views. However it's not Blade Runner in the sense of being AS good, not by a long shot! For me Blade Runner is the best and definitive sci-fi movie the only thing that has a remote chance of being better is the sequel. I give Blade Runner a perfect 10/10 while watching "the Final cut" other versions range from 7/10 to 9/10. I am hoping we get a R or unrated cut of Ghost to possibly give it a better rating (8/10), which really isn't that bad. However I do worry that when I get around to watching the original anime I'll either A. hate the live action movie or B. hate the anime, lol. I hope I can find middle ground and enjoy both =).

I have only seen a couple of minutes of the GITS anime. I knew little about it when I saw this film. So I came to the GITS movie with a fresh perspective.
SPOILERS It is said that the film is basically an action movie. This is only partly true. Importantly it's a science-fiction film on top of that. So, the story also has themes of cybernetic enhancement (cyborgs/H+/Transhumanism), hacking, distributed networking, implanted memories blended with various kinds of criminality including company corruption / exploitation.
Also a type of science fiction movie creates a futuristic city, where the wealthy and the poor live side-by-side with stunning skyscrapers (which can also be dominated by capitalist advertisements). - This kind of SF goes all the way back to Metropolis. - And more recently from Blade Runner to The Fifth Element then Minority Report, the city becomes a character in itself. - The GITS city in the film has an intensity of light, holographic images and movement.
The GOTS movie costumes, make up, set design also had many interesting choices imo.
- In a sense the "shell" of the city, the outside, is bright, childlike while inside the buildings there is often darkness and a feeling of ominous foreboding. This mirrors the state of the central character. On the outside she is beautiful / serene but within her mind are horrible secrets of a corrupt world.
Imo at least, BB ;-)

I saw it today in 2D and I did like it.
But, during some scenes I did think: this would look much better in 3D or IMAX, but alas I can't be picky. No IMAX anywhere around for at least a couple of hundred kms, and I missed the 3D OV showing at my local cinema, so if I wanted the OV and not a dubbed one I could only choose the 2D.
