The MCU films have long been criticized that for all their epic battles, it leaves no long lasting impact in their world. Well, here's the chance to change that. The war against Thanos should leave both the human world and human society broken and damaged. Then after the war, what few remaining Avengers become the champions of society in a post-apocalyptic world.
It would be so awesome if they did this.

It would be awesome but then the naysayers would start bitching that DC tried it first with the Knightmare sequence in BVS.

X-Men Apocalypse already did it.

X-Men Apocalypse already did it. Not yet it didn't, since we don't really see the aftermath of what happened after Apocalypse. The only thing we see is the X-men rebuilding the mansion and there's nothing post apocalyptic about it. Besides, the X-men franchise plays around with continuity too much that a post-apocalyptic world won't have much impact since you know they can remake it again in the next movie. But if the MCU goes into a post-apocalyptic world, all their shows would need to follow suit and it will be another defining moment for the film industry initiated by the MCU.

I probably meant DOFP.

DOFP "started" their movie in a post apocalyptic world. What I'm talking about is the MCU actually shows their world transitioning into a post apocalyptic one. As far as I know, no major movie has ever done so. Movies will mostly either be before a cataclysmic event or already in the future of a post apocalyptic world. If the MCU actually shows how it transitions into it then for the next few phases develop that world, well, that's something completely new and will again set them miles apart from the competition.

No. And we know this isn't going to happen anyway because the sequels to current franchises aren't going to suddenly be post apocalyptic.
The entire MCU becomes set in a post-apocalyptic world? That's not going to happen. If you want post apocalyptic, go watch Mad Max or Dark Tower.

It'd be an interesting experiment for one movie, but it'd get old after a while if spread over multiple entries.

I think it could be done well, but Marvel remains one bright image of joy in modern entertainment, so I'd rather they not mess with it. The (usually) cheerful Marvel universe would be kind of going against what made it so successful with a decimated planet earth and a "all hope is lost" kind of finale.

Disney/Marvel have not the balls for this. Doesn't suit in their lollipop world full of pink unicorns and rainbows. They even rejected the Demon in the Bottle Storyline for Iron Man 3.

Worlds where Alien Warlords smash open peoples' heads, Ancient Cults subvert World Organizations, madmen liquefy people just for the Hell of it, people watch their parents get their necks and skulls bashed open, people become suicidal due to feeling their have no place in the world, watching their loved one grow old and die and being helpless to stop it... ...Wow, what a "lollipop world". Demon in the Bottle was rejected because in truth it's not THAT great a story, it's just nostalgia blinding people to its flaws. And in boozes' place...they used PTSD. Wow, how childish. Marvel COULD do this, but it'd only be good for one AU movie. Forcing every single upcoming film to take place in some post-apocalyptic setting is ruining too much of the other planned movies for nothing.

The battle with Thanos will end just like whats happened in every other major Avenger film. Joking together, having shawarma, writing make-up letters and forgetting any long lasting damage. I wouldn't be surprised if no one died either.

People deal with their stuff and move on. I don't see why you're complaining over this, X-Men does the same stuff.

Serious stuff happens one second, and can easily be followed by silly stuff. THAT is life, no "all grim, all broody 24/7". That's just nonsense.

Maybe not full-on post-apocalyptic, but each sequel showing the world rebuilding more and more after Thanos's devastating attack would be cool. Too cool to actually happen.
