what's their team look like this year?
didn't they have a bit of a firesale during the winter meetings?
get any interesting prospects in return (besides JP Crawford who may have just needed a change of scenery)

The Ms are in full rebuild mode. I'd be shocked if all 3 of Jay Bruce, Edwin Encarnacio and Kyle Seager were on the Opening Day roster as they just plow forward with dumping every contract they have and turning towards the future.
Due to JP Crawford's current service time, you can expect the Ms to put him in the minors to start the year to extend his years of team control. Plus, not for nothing, he could use it.

I still get no love when you make your little call outs to baseball fans, huh? Okay.... Something happens in Beverly Hills 90210 world and it's "hey Millar", but pitchers and catchers show up and I get nuttin.... Still got a little Buck Showalter in ya, don't ya? |

one of those '1 Day' contracts as he retires as a Mariner?
or are they actually keeping him around on the roster?
guess it would be nice to have a vet presence and established team/city star like that in the clubhouse even if he plays sporadically - but would detractors state he's taking up a roster spot that could go to a young kid - or would some argue that 'young kid' would be better off spending time enhancing/developing his skills on the farm?
i.e. you have Ichiro around as a player/coach type of role to mentor the young kids

I've told this story before but I'll tell it again briefly since it's the Mariners.
I used to go to Spring training every year for a couple weeks (years ago). Because of "people we know in the know" I was out there shagging fly balls with the Mariners early in the morning - mostly me and minor leaguers, before the big guns came out. But I've played baseball my whole life, I was making catches and firing the ball back in. I had a M's practice jersey and hat on, so I looked good. They tell me to come off the field as the big guys are coming out now, I'm walking away and all these kids are begging for my autograph. I keep telling them I don't play for the Mariners but they insist, so I start signing. There's all these balls out there with the Mariners and me on them.

I imagine something a step up from what Yoenis Cespedes got - something along the lines of 4 years, $130m, in that range. Earlier today, the Harper camp announced they aren't even willing to listen to a shorter term deal so unless the Giants are willing to double the length of that contract, it ain't happening. Will he return to the Nats? Bizarre how this is turning out. |
