I have wanted to watch The Sopranos for years and just recently finally decided to dive in. I'm about six or seven episodes into the first season, and I gotta say I'm not that impressed. It's okay, but not mind-blowingly good. The first season seems a little amateurish to be honest. The clips I've seen on YouTube make the show seem so much better. Is the first season a weaker one? I don't even know if I am going to bother with it after the first season.

The show provided an interesting concept--following a mafia-connected family with a lack of censorship on violence and higher than average production values, good acting, but like all of these serial R rated series, they tend to have a lot of filler. So yes it was overrated. Ultimately it is a very negative show--a black comedy, although it had some memorable episodes now and then. I just don't think one can jump into an episode without knowing the characters. And I thought the final episode was weird and terrible. I dont think I can even say "you should watch this episode" because you won't get the context without seeing other epidoes. I hate these soap opera type shows--won't watch another.

I binge-watched the first season and couldn't get enough at times but I keep stalling on the second one. So far Tony's kids are no longer very interesting. Now that they're no longer innocent and know what their father does for a living they've turned into an annoying Greek chorus that comments on things snarkily but doesn't do much. I miss the psychiatrist and Tony's sessions, though I guess she's about to make a return.
My big problem with this show is I hate to be shown that evil is prevalent in human society, it just depresses me. The things they do to people who get in their way are terrible. I feel sorry for the restaurant owner and other mostly decent people who have the misfortune of growing up with the hoodlums and being forced to deal with them and to some extent be one of them. I think this is not a show where the good guys will win in the end, or even win many battles at all.

One thing about the show I didn't like were the extended dream sequences for some of the later episodes. I'm like "Just get to the point already". I don't need to spend 20 minutes or more for certain episodes to see weird dream stuff.

Watched the first season. It's alright, but I didn't think it was the amazingly great show everyone makes it out to be.

It's great. Or at least it was great for it's time 20 years ago. Whenever I bring up the idea that older shows can sometimes be hard to watch a few tards on here lose their mind.

Keep in mind that this show started a lot of what you see today. The show is 20 years old now. I still think it is great though. One of the best shows ever made.

Tony Soprano is a vivid character, one of the best in all of TV.

Because they're doing the dream sequences already in season one.

It helped spawn the anti-hero TV boom. Tony has good tendencies but unleashes horror upon people all the time. He might have been a different person had he grown up with different circumstances. The whole show is fascinating to me, how people morph to suit their own needs, like Carmela.
So many shows have borrowed from The Sopranos since, so watching it for the first time now might make it seem less special.

Which character says "fuck" more - Tony Soprano or Tony Montana?

We watched a couple seasons of The Sopranos, didn't like it. I'm not going to say overrated-that term is overused. It's just a series, I don't like as much as many others do.

This show was great for character development as real people. Flawed people who were not all the anger you saw. You don't see that with the crap that comes out today.
You think that teachers show is anything like reality? No one I work with wears whore shoes and hoochie mama dresses to school!
Shows today don't even TRY to get the area right? Lol at girl meets world on middle schools AND the cyclone!

Less so than the Wire which arguably only had one great season, the first, Sopranos held strong for three.

Every critically-acclaimed work of art is going to have people who don't agree with the praise.
Me? I loved The Sopranos. I thought James Gandolfini did a great job as Tony. He was a violent mobster yes, but Gandolfini made the character feel human and compelling. I was intrigued by the various mob crews, their hierarchies, unique personalities (like Paulie Walnut's humor) and how they all balanced their criminal lives with their domestic everyday ones.
Plus, it was well-acted. I still get goosebumps thinking of the performances between Gandolfini and Falco during the Season 4 finale.

I rewatched it recently and found the first season was a little off. I still thought it was good but felt the show got more polished in the second season and onward. It still has some hit or miss episodes where the creator dabbles into the surreal, but for the most part I prefer the follow up seasons.
Season 2 has Ritchie Aprille and he’s pretty awesome.

Something is definitely off about this. The first season is rated 100% at Rotten Tomatoes. People say it's the best show of all time. And I'm watching it and all I can think is exactly what you said: It's off. It's a little amateurish imo.
I actually thought "maybe it gets better" too. I'd been watching clips of it on YouTube and thought "Wow, I gotta see this." It's why I started watching.
