Clowns give me the heeby jeebies. You can't get a good read on them under their make up.

Clowns give me the heeby jeebies. You can't get a good read on them under their make up. I can't stand clowns either. But my coulrophobia is, I know, based on one specific event: When I was 4 yrs. old, it was my cousin's 3rd birthday. My uncle, her father, wanted to give her a surprise, so he went to her preschool to pick her up, dressed as a clown—on a blisteringly hot day in the middle of August. I was there too, and, as my uncle walked in, it was so hot that the clown makeup started dripping from his face, oozing off in big globs. I still remember it looked like his face was melting off. I've had a (manageable, but still palpable) fear of clowns ever since. Another one from my endless archive of ridiculous stories, BATouttaheck .

For sure tangential to the OP but will plow on anyway ! At Circus World Museum there was the most terrific husband and wife team of clowns. They were very inspired by Laurel and Hardy and did quite a few knock about, fall down, water throwing type skits. I got to talk to her after a show and asked if when they had had a real life disagreement, they got some of the angries out during the skits My suspicions were confirmed. BUT, she said that they had so much fun doing the shows that all was usually forgiven and forgotten. Anyway. It was fun talking to a real life professional clown and not at all scary. Of course, if her face had started to fall off like Nalkarj 's Uncle's the story might have been quite different.
As a kid I saw the Ringling Show every spring and one of my fav movies is The Greatest Show on Earth and Emmett Kelly used to appear at Brooklyn Dodger Games so clowns have always been cool ! Evil clowns are not on my radar.

BATouttaheck I wish I'd gone to the circus as a kid--perhaps it would've reduced the coulrophobia. Ah, well... As is, I don't run when I see a clown coming or anything like that; I just feel uncomfortable, all while trying to force my rational mind to remember that it's all right... By the way, Uncle Clown-Makeup was the same as Uncle Save-a-Coin, as you might have guessed.

So. If Clown fear is coulrophobia, what is fear of lit firecrackers being held in a hand and/or fear of balloons being rubbed so that they MIGHT explode ? Childhood trauma brought on at a party attended by a very drunk relative of the guest of honor. Probably an Uncle. I kinda like YOUR Uncle C_M / SaC ... seems like a cool fella, Nalkarj edit : Melting Faces Phobia ... avoid Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist ! Especially the latter !

BATouttaheck, he's a great guy. Got a whole boatload of funny stories about him, including the time he went hiking in the woods and decided to bring gigantic steaks for each person. Didn't go over well. Fear of things exploding? For the sound, could it be a subset of phonophobia? For the explosion itself, could it be ekrixiphobia? And a specific fear of fireworks may be pyrotechnophobia?

Nalkarj Hmmmmm ... wonder if "Discussions" could miraculously sprout a section of fun stories about friends and relations. Funny is always GOOD ! Phobia is very specific and is more the expectation of the explosion and subsequent hand parts flying in the air (ugh). yah...too much info. Sorry. Yuck. Shudder ! Not the sound or fireworks as such but the an----ti------ci-----------pa-------------tion ! btw I just noticed this thread is from APRIL ? I was worrying about bothering the OP with the tangents !
