If some bullshit “star” like Machado gets $300 from a second rate team, what in God’s name is Trout gonna get when he’s due? Half a billion and ownership percentage?

I agree with you here, but I also agree with your previous post, about how the Padres are at least positioned to move up in the division. This is really the Dodgers division with the Rockies being a WC team and the Rockies are facing the free agent issues you mentioned. The Padres have a completely stacked farm system with 10 of the top 100 prospects in all of baseball. I know, I know, prospects, etc., but if they're ever going to compete in the next few years, this is their shot. Machado gives them at least some semblance of legitimacy so when their kids come up, they at least have a lineup worth fearing. They weren't doing jack shit without him, why not try to give your fans a few years of something worthwhile to watch? But Machado can't pitch. This team will become the new 2003 Texas Rangers. A team that can put up seven runs a game and a staff that can't keep the opponents from scoring nine. And realizing you have no money to get pitching. Now with three ghastly contrasts on the books. From 2020-2023 They will owe MM $30, 000,000, $22,000,000 to Will Myers (yuck) and $21,000,000 to Eric Hosmer. Had I been the Padres, I would have signed Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel.
Meh, what do I know...
If they end up being the 2003 Rangers, I'll go to more games in one year than I've gone in the thirteen years I've been out here, thirteen years where the Padres have had Adrian Gonzalez, Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman and . . . Justin Upton for half a season. I've gone to home games where Daniel Bard and Mark Bellhorn have been the cleanup hitters. Even with this Machado contract, they're spending $100 million in salaries this year. They spent $96 million last year. They spent $112 million in 2016. They haven't been better than 3rd place in the West since 2010 and by 2020, that could be the case. With all these other teams sitting on their thumbs not trying to get better this year, I'm happy that the Padres actually went for it.

Making fans pay for tickets only to trot out minor leaguers on a daily basis should be outlawed. Good for the Padres here. They have a promising future, this can help bridge the gap.

10 years 300 mil After 4 years when he's hitting .240 and injured, and no one will take his contract or even a portion of it, I hope the Padres suffer the remaining 6 years for being so f'ing stupid. These owners NEVER learn. It's mind boggling these people got rich somehow. Why is he suddenly going to suck at 30 years of age? Why is he suddenly going to be injured? He played in 162 games last year. Of active position players, the only players within two years of his age that have a better WAR are Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. His WAR is 6.4 points higher than Harper's is with Harper playing exactly one more game in his career than Machado. Pujols got his big contract at 32; Ryan Howard at 30. Machado will be 26 for the first three months of this season. Yeah, it's stupid money, but only in the way that all athletes get paid stupid money.

But I think people (myself included) are put off by his comments from the Dodgers. Would his stats be Trout-like if he DID hustle?

I think Trout is like the Patriots - - you say "this is the outlier; let's compare accomplishments to what is possible for the 99.99% of others".

Scherzer is 2nd at $37.5 mil. Is it still Zack Greinke? I know he was #1 in prior years but wasn't sure if he had since been eclipsed.

It's highly possible he could be great for the full ten years. Except how many long term contracts EVER work out? Pujols, yeah, and even they wanted out of it still. These f'ing dumb owners never learn. I don't knwo you of course, but if I did I'd bet you good money they're trying to dump him at some point during that contract. It's just plain stupid to give a guy a ten year contract and for big money and a guy who is lazy like this guy on top. And maybe I'll be wrong, it's very possible. I don't think I will be but who knows. What's worse it means Harper gets 320 for ten years and that's a guy who's always injured and I guarantee he won't play for ten years.
