Why is he suddenly going to suck at 30 years of age? Why is he suddenly going to be injured? He played in 162 games last year. Of active position players, the only players within two years of his age that have a better WAR are Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. His WAR is 6.4 points higher than Harper's is with Harper playing exactly one more game in his career than Machado. Pujols got his big contract at 32; Ryan Howard at 30. Machado will be 26 for the first three months of this season. Yeah, it's stupid money, but only in the way that all athletes get paid stupid money. It's highly possible he could be great for the full ten years. Except how many long term contracts EVER work out? Pujols, yeah, and even they wanted out of it still. These f'ing dumb owners never learn. I don't knwo you of course, but if I did I'd bet you good money they're trying to dump him at some point during that contract. It's just plain stupid to give a guy a ten year contract and for big money and a guy who is lazy like this guy on top. And maybe I'll be wrong, it's very possible. I don't think I will be but who knows. What's worse it means Harper gets 320 for ten years and that's a guy who's always injured and I guarantee he won't play for ten years. I mean, I hear you but I think you're over-stating it a bit. A team like San Diego HAS to overpay for free agents, given their lackluster record for the last.....20 years, not to mention their pitcher friendly park, but they see themselves as having a window approaching and they're going for it. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I do think you're automatically dismissing it as a bad move. It's a gamble, for sure, but there are two sides to the coin. To look at it and just say "the owners never learn" or "long contracts never work out" is something of a cop out. Yes, we'd all agree that the Angles made a mistake with Pujols, even without the benefit of hindsight. But Machado is 26, just now entering his prime and there's no reason to think he won't be producing at a very high level for the next few years (plus, I think the "dirty player" and "lazy" are also a bit over-stated). If it becomes an albatross towards the end, teams are willing to live with that. After all, what does it mean for the contract to "work out?" If Machado gets hurt and sucks for all 10 years, then yes it's a failure. But if he produces at an MVP-esque level for 5 years, and the Padres reach a WS, is that a failure? I say no. That's probably a discussion for another thread. Plus, they have a TV deal that brings in $50m in windfall revenues annually, plus they own a 20% stake in the local FoxSports affiliate. As of last year, the organization as a whole is valued at $1.2b so it's not like they can't afford it. Yeah, they've made some questionable moves with Will Myers and Eric Hosmer but this one is for a guy that is, in my mind, more likely to be a difference maker. Just my opinion.

And the franchise can't slip into irrelevance, playing poor stepchild to the Dodgers for the next 20 years. Ans if you are going to go for it, go hard. The Orioles did some half assed measures (Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner) and look what it got them. Sorry nut. This sure isn't half assed. If it was me, I'd go the "Astros Way" and build it up from scratch. But that's impossible with Myers and Hosmer already on board. It's a formidable lineup if Manny Margot, Hunter Renfroe snd Fernando Tatis Jr come around.
Are they really in for Harper too? Heard rumors...

Saw this on Twitter and I agree with it:
"Machado to the Padres feels to me like Cano to the Mariners. We will never hear from him again." That snapped my head back. Because it could be right.

My two personal faves are the fried calimari, and the Thai Shrimp which has a peanut and lemongrass sauce that I drink by the glass. Tacos - the perfect food (and are invariably better on the west coast).

In an interesting little addition to what we were talking about yesterday, earlier this year Forbes reported that MLB had gross revenues of $10.3b in 2018*, but had the biggest one-year drop in what teams spent on player salaries, coming in at 54.2%, a 4% drop from 2017. So, as with all things, everything needs to be looked at in proper context.
* A record for the sport and its 16th straight year of setting its own revenue record, immediately undercutting the annual whines from know-nothings about how the sport is dying.

Saw this on Twitter and I agree with it: "Machado to the Padres feels to me like Cano to the Mariners. We will never hear from him again." That snapped my head back. Because it could be right. Except Cano was 31 when he signed with the Mariners and Machado is 26. If Machado plays out the whole ten year deal, he'll be younger than Cano is right now. People always go to Howard, Cabrera, Pujols, and Cano when it comes to these long deals, but those guys were all in the 30s when they signed those albatrosses. For whatever reason, they don't bring up the ten-year-deal Jeter signed in 2001 when he was 26. That's the comp. Jeter played another four years after that contract was done and lead the AL in hits two years after its completion.

I do think it's a good move for the Padres but at the same time I just dont have faith in that franchise that it'll work out.
They have a decent future looking forward but they need those prospects to hit. Outside of that SP they got from Boston in I believe the Kimbrel trade idk what they have there. That seems to be the weakness going forward. Signing somebody like Kuechel wouldn't be bad as long as it's not an overpay as i dont think he is a true ace currently. Think he goes back to Houston though.

I guess this means the Pads have the NL West locked up. Will this force the Dodgers to sign Harper?

If some bullshit βstarβ like Machado gets $300 from a second rate team, what in Godβs name is Trout gonna get when heβs due? Half a billion and ownership percentage? Last I saw was Angel's and Trout were talking like 8/$385
