FILM: Andrei Rublev On: Film4 Date: Wednesday 5th April 2017 Time: 00:10 to 04:00 (3 hours and 50 minutes long)
Anatoly Solonitsyn stars in director Andrei Tarkovsky's epic masterpiece, a biographical portrait of the celebrated Russian icon painter who was born around 1360. Shot in monochrome by cinematographer Vadim Yusov, the narrative begins in 1400. Rublev and his two assistants leave their monastery to travel to Moscow, where Rublev's reputation gets him invited by the even greater iconographer Theophanes the Greek to assist in the decoration of the Cathedral of the Annunciation. The offer causes Rublev to fall out with his friends and prompts an artistic peregrination, during which he witnesses naked pagan celebrants attacked by soldiers, his own artisans cruelly disfigured on the orders of the nobility and a Tartar massacre, from which he narrowly escapes with his life. The latter incident causes Rublev to take a vow of silence and renounce painting for more than a decade. But an astounding act of faith will rekindle his creativity. (Premiere, In Russian with Subtitles, Black and White, 1966)
Starring: Anatoliy Solonitsyn, Ivan Lapikov, Nikolay Grinko, Nikolay Sergeev, Irina Tarkovskaya, Nikolay Burlyaev
