The official reason given was that he’s too busy writing The Winds of Winter. However, I suspect that his relationship with Benioff and Weiss has deteriorated badly in recent years and so he simply didn’t wish to do a cameo. After all, it would’ve taken a couple of days at most. Too busy writing? We’re talking about a man who felt that changing the backstory of a minor Dothraki character from the books in season 1 was a huge deal. One can only imagine how he feels about the way that Benioff and Weiss treated his material in later seasons.

That may be. Or it could be that the man has finally got into the mood to do what he's been failing at doing for years and refuses the risk of distraction. There should be no doubt that he sees the flaws of the show as what they are but I would suspect he more than welcomes the wealth that comes with it and cares a lot less than his fans wish him to. After all, the worse the show gets, the better his books will look.

I wouldn't go that far. We are talking about two people that have helped make him richer than he could ever have dreamed. Sure, both guys are probably kinda dicks, and they have no where near Martin's talent, but there's no reason to think Martin still wouldn't keep a professional relationship with them or with HBO. Martin has always admitted that the show would eventually go in a different direction even as far back as season 1. The fact that the series has become so bad, probably disappoints him, but at the end of the day the guy is a realist. I'd say his excuse for refusing the cameo is genuine.

I wouldn't make speculations about reasons. He simply may not have a lot of interest in doing a cameo. It's fine with my anyway as I certainly don't lose any value by not watching GRRM on screen.

I don't think he's mad at them. But he did say he does not watch the show anymore. I think he's just totally done talking or thinking about the show. Really glad he turned it down though. That would be the height of cringe. I read one fan theory that wanted GRRM reading Sam's book to the kids at the end. GRRM would be old Sam. Crisis averted

Really glad he turned it down though. That would be the height of cringe. In terms of cameos, I think the height of cringe was well and truly met with Ed Sheeran.

I can see the relationship not being strong any longer but I think GRRM is just too busy with the other projects that he is working on, the other HBO shows and no doubt other irons he has in the fire. Winds of Winter not being one of them I fear.
I do agree the show isn't as great as it once was and that started in Season 6 when the show went beyond what Martin has so far written. Can't agree that it sucks though, just down to the level that all the lesser shows are. Good, with spectacular special efects but not great. More like what I found the Walking Dead used to be, a poor show overall but with great moments and individual episodes (though still higher quality in totality as I think TWD as a show is ass).
Really looking forward to what the final six eps give us though, hoping for strong conclusion, less teleportation for one.
