So I've been thinking about the two of them and their motivations.
In The Dark Knight Rises Bane, an League of Shadow outcast turned radical extremist, goal is simply to carry out what Ra's Al Ghul originally intended. Which is to destroy Gotham City.
Why destroy Gotham? Because it's corrupted. It's a disease ridden city of Crime and corruption. Bane simply wants to cure it. Gotham is slowly dying from it and by burning it into the ground. A mercy killing, if you will.
In Avengers: Infinity War, The Mad Titan Thanos seeks to collect the six powerful Infinity Stones so that once combined he can wipe out half of the known universe population.
Why wipe out half of the known universe population? Because he wants to bring balance to the universe because in his mind overpopulation is a death sentence for world's due to the waste of natural resources that would take to substan large populations as well as climate change if his homeworld was anything to go by. It's actually a real fear outside of these film's, especially man made climate change, which isn't taking as serious as it should. Unfortunately.
But is that really such a bad thing? Through out the Batman comics, cartoons, movies and even Video Games that Gotham is a fuck up city. It's so corrupted and polluted with crime that it took a man dressed up in a Bat suit to do something about it and even then it really doesn't solve anything. In fact I'd argue that Batman makes things even worse, especially since he really doesn't want to kill some of his dangerous foes.
Take Joker for example. Batman beats him up and sends him to Arkham, only for him to break out and kill and wreck havoc again. He is an example of the disease that Bane wants to clense and can you blame him? Not even the authorities have taken out the joker, which in all honesty they should. Gotham never gets better.
As for bringing balance to the universe, again it's not a real bad thing. We've seen how selfish humanity is and how some of us even care so little even about the planet that substains our very existence.
Now I'd argue that a real mercy killing on Thanos part would to be wiped out 100% of the population, but that's not exactly a celebrated view.
Others have pointed out that Thanks could just double the resources, but that is a very arrogant position.
As far as I'm concerned both Bane and Thanos are not really the villains. But more of a Antiheros.
